This has been around a long time in the electronics news groups, but I haven't seen any mention of it here so I thought I would post the link in case anyone was interested. It is a circuit designed to flash a LED every second or so. It runs from a calculator sized solar panel, and according to its creator it will go about twenty hours or so from a five or ten minute exposure to light.

You can see that the item there is encased in a block of clear plastic, making it impervious to water and most forms of abuse.

Can anyone think of what a circuit like this would be good for?

Maybe it could be used for marker beacons of some kind, trail lights maybe, or just an odd toy. It would make novel paper weights anyway. Someone suggested casting something like this in a clear ball with a positional sensor of some kind so that when the ball rolled various colors of LEDs would flash. That could be pretty neat.

Any other ideas?
