Did anyone on the CPF watch the new Battlestar Galactica Mini-Series on the Sci-Fi Channel last December? Did you like it? I was just reading that the Sci-Fi has officially announced the mini-series will be picked up as a series and will start filming 13 episodes in Vancouver shortly. I liked the new Battlestar series as much as the old but from what I was reading the reactions to the new series is mixed. People who like the old series didn't like the new series and people who never saw the old series like the new series. I think it will be a good hit for the Sci-Fi channel.

Does it mean your old if you watched the original one?

Yes it does.

Seriously, I liked the old one a lot, and I can see why diehards are disheartened, Boomer and Starbuck girls, the President being a woman and having power, Boomer being a bad guy (or gal as the case may be), no Earth.

On the other hand, the new series is imaginative, more current and hip and has appeal for drama and relationships as well as shoot 'em up testosterone and space strategy. I recall it being the highest rated show for Sci-Fi for the year, and third ever, after Dune and Taken.

It's got old elements, like the big ship feel and new ones, like the Cylon infiltrators. I think it has great promise. I read somewhere shooting starts in April and they want to be on the air by next winter.

Back to torches...

As I kid, I was a fan of the original Galactica series. Watching old reruns one can't help to think how cheesy it was, but it had it's charm back in the day. I did watch Sci-Fi's version and I enjoyed it for what it was: a re-imagined Battlestar Galactica. I liked it alot and was not disappointed in the least with the mini-series. I can't wait to watch the upcoming series and see what the deal is with Boomer. If you recall, at the end of the episode when several human-looking cylons entered the abandoned space station, there was one that looked like Boomer. So, is the Boomer aboard the Galactica the real deal or a Cylon infiltrator?

I was a big fan of the original series.

The new one started off very bad (part I) and then got pretty darn good (part 2). I liked the new Starbuck very much, and think the actress was effective. She seemed like "one of the guys", and didn't stand out as a woman (i.e. it just seemed like Starbuck, regardless of gender), if that makes any sense.

Link fixed. Thanks. (edit)

Other than that, I did watch the mini-series and I liked it. I am also a fan of the original series. I will watch the Series when it comes on SciFi Channel. It is going to pick up where the mini-series left off. I have known that BG was going into Series production for a month now.

Remember that Baltar and his 'Dish' of a problem is the comic relief in the series.

Overall I thought it was pretty good. They have made some decisions which I think detract. I liked the original idea of the Cylons being created by a race of lizards from somewhere else like in the original series. I also liked the Egyptian themed stuff from the original, but I guess they thought that had been pretty played out in Stargate recently. I can live with those changes though as I thought the story lines and writing around this was pretty good. I thought the actors were good too, nobody really sucked and thats saying something /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif If it becomes a series I will definitely setup TiVO to record it.

I'll have to watch it again (couldn't keep it on TiVO forever, burned it to VCD's (don't have a DVD drive yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif )) to check out the soundtrack again. I'm usually pretty focused on soundtracks since I very nearly chose a college track so that I could become a soundtrack composer. But for some reason I don't remember much about this one...

I am old enough to remember the original series, and to be honest, I think I liked the new mini-series even more! I'm glad to hear Sci-Fi is going to be producing more episodes.

To be honest with you, I wasn't even going to bother watching it. I mean, everyone got turned into either a woman or an Englishman. Except for Commander Adama, who was now Hispanic.(Before you flame me, I thought Edward James Olmos turned out to be a good Commander Adama).

I can't really explain why I liked the new series so much. I thought it had way too much sex. I mean every 15 minutes, someone was making out. My friend who walked in on me watching it thought I was watching a porno!

Plus, we are still using bullets and dogfighting at 200 yards when we have the technology to perform faster than light jumps? Even now, a Phoenix missile from a F14 Tomcat can down a Russian bomber at a range of 50 miles!

Despite all this, I loved the twist at the end. The climatic battle was totally cool to watch. And the whole show had a desperate, we humans are fighting off becoming extinct, tension to it. Which was probably the show's strongest point. There was certainly a lot of bravery and sacrifice displayed during the show.

I can't wait to see the new episodes!

Modern SciFi shows (TV and movies) are tending towards Scientific Realism as the Politically Correct 'thing'. The Battlestar Galactica mini-series also brought up the principle of Unitended Consequences.

Stainless, don't worry. They are certainly interested in every revenue stream they can find so it won't be long before they are. I think just about every other production they have done is available on DVD (at least the good ones) so you won't have to wait too long.

Now if they have really decided to do more episodes I'd be surprised if they didn't show up in a hurry.

Can you point me to a decent link? I'm getting desperate for entertainment; but whenever I search Amazon etc, I tend to come up empty.

Here is the Link for the DVD from Amazon.com Here Not shipping yet, I hear it is now available in England on DVD. The box on the right on Amazon's web page will let you put your email address in so they will send you an email when it is shipping.

Well, I'm not sure that everything they have produced counts as entertainment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Some of it was rather painful!

All of the Dune stuff is available. I just went to the sci-fi pictures part of their site and randomly picked Dog Soldiers and Deep Shock from the list and they both come up in a search on Amazon. (There isn't anything on Amazon that seems to identify them as a sci-fi production, but if you look at the cast and crew the people are the same so I'm assuming they are the same movie) So just dig around some /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm not recommending those 2 movies by the way, haven't seen either one, just looking up to make sure that some of them are available.

Enjoy!
