If a metal object touches both of the charger contacts, will it short out the battery? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

If you short both rings on the body it will short the battery. If you put a piece of foil over the charger tips and then place the light over it, it'll short the battery and the charger. I do not know if the charger is fused. Don't think so though the one time I got it partially open.

FWIW, the rearmost ring is the negative contact and the forward ring is the positive contact.

For what it's worth, I'm not measuring any voltage an the contacts in either polarity. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I take that back, I'm getting 0.1 V. Obviously not the battery voltage. There must be some electronics involved.

Hmmmm You would think that you would get full voltage! I don't get it...

Yup! There must be a diode in there...

I don't have a MC, but I did a quickie test using my TL and a 1N4004 rectifier:

No diode = 7.95 Volts
Reverse-biased diode (cathode to +batt) = 0.035 Volts
Forward-biased diode (anode to +batt) - 7.68 Volts

I used a Fluke 87 meter.

I have a Fluke 87 too, but I'm getting under 1 volt both ways.

Interesting. That must be what has broken inside of my MC rendering it unable to take a charge.

Yeah,
Certainly seems to make sense. Please disregard my post above due to a particularly humiliating combination of malfunctioning equipment, misleading measurements and out and out ignorance on my part. Quite uncharacteristic.

I wonder if they had some problems with the first ones made. Most belt carriers used by cops are metal rings on a leather or nylon strap. Makes me wonder if Mag got complaints of them shorting out.

I thought it would be a problem as soom as I pluged it into the charger for the first time.

I'm glad it won't be a problem though.
