So I'm looking for a pocket knife, I like the benchmade griptilian and the kershaw blackout. From the specs, they look almost identical to me, but the kershaw has a black tri-nitride coating, which adds a visual appeal.

Thoughts?

I have both. The Kershew assisted opening is a cool factor. It's a tough choice. The Griptilian opens just as quick and to me it feels better in my hand, also the Griptilian can be bought with a black coated blade. If I had to choose just one, it would be my Benchmade. Just my two cents. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

I've had them both and I think they're very different.
Blade shapes are quite different with a larger cutting edge on the Kersh, If I remember.
The speed opening is tres cool and reliable. After you get used to a thumb stud, hole or disc you can open the knife about as quick as an auto or assist.
I prefer the fit and form of the Griptillian for my uses. I just got a mini grip and like it as much as the fiull size /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Black coating on the BM's really stand up to lots of use without silvering. You do see scuffs tho.
I didn't have the blackout long enuf to get an appreciation for the hardness of their coating.
Kershaw blackout $50 at Walmart. Grip ~ 65 for the BC. I don't think Cabelas, ~$65, has the D2 black blade version anymore. I heard they switched to 440. That's not a bad thing just like D2 better. Tougher to sharpen tho.
Keep your eye in the BST they both come up now and again.

I have the mini griptilian and I have loved it more than any of the kershaws that I have. It seems to hold an edge much better than the vapor that I had. Build quality is excellent and for only $10 more it is well worth it to me...

th griptilian is a good knife, the small one, but try on the Spyderco Delica, I carry it in my pocket every day and I don't even notice that is there, very thin, all S.steel and assisted opening.

I had the Blackout, and sold it to a coworker. Really nice knife, and very sharp. I just prefer the Spyderco knives better, I can open them nearly as quickly.

Bought my minigrip her in the B/S/T. Love it. Prefer it over any of the Kershaws I have owned.

Just got my MiniGrip comboedge and I love it! It has the perfect balance and proportion for its size and the feel of the mechanism is smooth and solid. It is just an exceptionally well executed small knife.

I have the straight/plain edge mini-grip. It's a great knife. I'm really turned onto the Benchmade product line, as it relates to the Axis-Lock folders. I love my Osborne too.

Thanks, I bought a plain edge mini grip (556). It's not that mini in my hands and it's a great knife. I'll probably end up picking up the kershaw blackout as well. It has a combo blade and is easier for me to open... haha, the minigrip takes practice, it's my first thumb stud folder...

I personally prefer the griptilian, but I'll list some differences so you can decide.
GRIPTILIAN
<ul type="square">
[*]weight-3.25 oz
[*]Blade Length-3.45"
[*]overall length-8.07"
[*]Axis lock
[*]non-assisted
[*]metal pocket clip, reversable
BLACKOUT
<ul type="square">
[*]weight-3.5 oz
[*]Blade Length-3.25"
[*]overall length-7.75"
[*]Rail Lock
[*]assisted
[*]metal pocket clip, non-reversable
Additional comments:
-The griptilian has a hole for opening and the blackout has a reversable thumb stud (It can be moved with a philips screwdriver for left or right handed folks)
-serrated edge on the blackout is deeper
-the handle on the griptilian is secured at 5 points, the blackout is secured at 3 (Probably doesn't matter, both are near indestructable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I've decided to get them both, haha. I bought the mini-grip and i've mastered opening it quickly, but I can't resist the kershaw with it's black blade and assisted opener.

Cabela's still carries the D2 MiniGrip in plain edge. It's not on the website and the CSR may not find it looking casually so ask for a product specialist. They have a few left but the supply is limited.

Both is, of course, the correct choice.
