We've all fantasized about it; not all have experienced it. You know that special moment when your Flashaholic obsession is suddenly vindicated in the eyes of others as you come to their rescue in response to a plaintive "does anyone have a flashlight?" Or perhaps it's a "you call that a flashlight" moment as you trounce their Mag 4D with YOUR 2C modded with 4 123's and killer superbulb.

My latest Flashaholic moment occurred recently at a colleague's retirement party. After the usual speeches the gifts started, culminating in the presentation of a beautiful big sterling silver bowl with a dedication inscribed on its gleaming surface. I was standing right behind him with five or six others and everyone else was spread out across the room facing him. The entire room of about 70 people became absolutely quiet as we waited for him read the inscription. We waited….and waited …...and waited….I realized he was having trouble seeing the engraved words so, with a sudden quickening of my Flashaholic heart I reached into my right rear pocket, unclipped my E2E/McLux PR-T917, quickly tightened the LOTC and aimed an absolutely brilliant white beam onto the surface of the bowl. Seventy pleasantly shocked colleagues broke into wild laughter and enthusiastic applause.

It made my day.

What about YOUR Flashaholic moment?

I've had that moment at an awards ceremony, only not with a flashlight. When a piece of equipment failed, I stepped out from the audience, whipped out a tweaker and fixed the device that was holding up the show (they couldn't believe that I carried one around just in case). I heard laughter and then applause from the crowd. Took a quick bow and exited stage right...

Anyway, I know how you feel. Thanks for a neat story.

I'm not sure it's ever possible I'll have that moment.

The night of the shooting, I had my ElektroLumens Starlux 3D 1W light out and on a lot. Didn't win any converts, even though many cops even saw it (I made SURE they did!).

If that didn't do it, I don't know what will.

Sorry Brightnorm... a tweaker is a tiny screwdriver. The Xcelite R3432 "greenie" is a classic with geeks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Some people know I went to Mexico last month because I needed some equipment. Well I took the G2. On the car ride to the mountains, there was heavy fog. The headlights couldn't penetrate the fog well so I whipped out my G2 with lanyard. Though it was cold outside, I opened the window told the driver to turn off his headlights. When I turned on my G2, there was a small area illuminated yet, we could see it clearly. Everyone in the car was amazed at the brightness of my light.

Something I posted in the CAFE on 11-10-02:

"While paying for breakfast at a small cafe yesterday, I heard the words that are every flashaholics wet dream...."Anybody got a flashlight?" Almost before the words had cleared her mouth, my Scorpion was in my hand being offerd to her! Some that were there, say that they thought they saw a whiff of smoke coming from the Scoprion's holster! They had dropped something in kitchen and it had rolled into some small, dark, damp corner.

I still don't believe it, in public, "Anybody got a flashlight?" HooBoy!!! Made MY day!! "

It was a drug deal gone sour (Story said home invasion - we know better!) about 2 months ago centerd on the house next door.

Two shots hit the house across the street (no one injured). AK47 was dropped on the front yard next door. A blood trail led out into the street. One guy died, another got WAY messed up (lung and one arm toast).

Many cops came, but first one was almost 30 minutes. I found all the blood, the bullet holes etc before the crime scene unit arrived. Had my light on most of three hours.

Hope this helps!

Night of the blackout... I went in just as I stood when my radio went off, grabbing my backpack and duty belt. Had enough lights to light up everythign I wanted (and than some). Half way thru the night I ended doing CPR in the middle of the intersection lighted up by Pelican M6 held by the bystander. When I got home I turned on all my Krill lights and had jolly good time with my friends who were making sure my beer didn't get to warm. It was good since so many people either didn't have a flashlight or it went dead after 30 min.

well, my moment was not as exciting as others in this thread.

One fall evening at my local town's annual auto festival, there was a local state congresswoman at a booth registering people to vote. My wife and I just moved into the neighborhood and figured this was the easiest way to registed in county. As we started to fill out the forms, the congresswoman realized it was too dark - "I wish we had some more light!" I held up my Arc AAA and continued to write, then handed a small CountyComm light to the other person at the booth to hold up for my wife. The congesswoman replied, "Now that's a real republican!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif
Of course my wife thought - "I'm married to a real geek!"

On the night of the blackout, I had to pull an all-night shift to make sure that many of the systems came back up properly once the power was restored. We had enough generator power to light up a portion of one floor of a large building, but the power had been out for so long that most of the battery-powered emergency exit lights had already fizzled out, so most of the building was pitch black.

This was my first opportunity to try out my 3-cell maglight with a 1W Luxeon in it. That flashlight lasted all night long (with semi-intermittent use) and the combination of a bright light inside of a heavy aluminum stick made me feel a little safer as I wandered the pitch-black halls of the building, checking on things and escorting employees around. And yes, a coupla times I had the opportunity to say "it's an LED!" when others noticed how much whiter my light was than their incandescent flashlights.

I get the standard ribbing from friends and family that I assume many of you are familiar with. Well, this winter, late one evening, my wife and I and another couple were coming down a large set of stairs outside that had lots of ice patches on them. The stairs were stone and very, very wide. We were picking our way down in the middle, as there was less ice but no railings there. The flood light overhead decided to quit at that moment, with alot of stairs left to go. There was that moment of silence and then a collective, "oh, sh*&"! in the darkness.

Out comes the L4; Ta Da!!! I used the moments on the way down to the street to mimic my companions voices mocking my flashlight. It was sweet. I don't get complaints anymore, and my wife now has 4 lights.
