From http://www.megalaser.com

"Do you sell the same lasers as everyone else on the net?
No, they may look similar but our unique product range consists currently of two handheld green output lasers that have been sourced for their outstanding specification and build quality, modified to dramatically increase their performance, carefully calibrated, exhaustively tested and as such our products are unique and cannot be compared to the many mass produced and red and green laser pointers that can be found on many internet sites."

It does sound like they are buying them from a supplier such as http://www.atlasnova.com, tweaking the screw undeneath the button and/or adjusting the optical alignment and selling them on...

I believe Arnold had stated that the High Spec units on his site are the result miscalibration and come that way directly from the factory. He measures their output to determine just how much over 5mW they are. Megalaser's units are modified. Still, I find Megalaser a bit pricey compared to the units you can get from Atlas Nova.

Here's another thing from megalasers faq that made me wonder... i've added the bits in brackets.

"How do I know the real output power?
All lasers are tested for output power when the modules are manufactured (taiwan), re-tested by our supplier (atlasnova?) so that they are within the specification we require, then re-tested when we calibrate the units (tweak the screw and/or adjust the optical alignment) to their maximum performance level. This three phase totally independent testing process ensures that the maximum power achieved is possible and the final output figures are as accurate as the testing equipment can possibly be."
