Hey. I just drew out a schematic for a commercial LED Night Light made by a very famous North American manufacturer.

You may want to try this as well. It is even simpler.

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre> +--------------| |---------------+
: 1uF/240V :
: :
: +--+--+
o : :
--- ---
AC 240V led \ / / \
--- ---
o : :
: +--+--+
: :
: 1k/1W :
+-------------/\/\/\-------------+</pre><hr />

1uF capacitor at 50Hz will give about 6.8K conductance and together with 1k register, the total current to flow is about 30mA, this brings about 7W power sonsumption with 240V input.

I use 8mm blue led from ISP and it is just too cool.

I think you may be able to get rid of that huge cap and the large 1 watt resistor by doing this instead; see below.
This works for me and cuts power dissipation way down.

For 240VAC operation use a 100nF capacitor.
<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>
+----o~~o-----------| |----+
| fuse 470nF 250V |
| |
| +---------------+
o | |
--- ---
120V \ / 1N4007 / \ LED
--- ---
o | |
| | |
| | 1kohm 1/2W |
+----------+---/\/\/\------+
</pre><hr />
Note that the more complicated circuit which I posted originally only takes 100mW and has some voltage spike immunity; it is a commercial design.
