Thank you all for the offers...much appreciated!!!

I have the housing situation taken care of (a housemate scenario with him and one of his friends - though I will have my own bedroom/laboratory space), and I intend to keep my website running even after I move to the new place.

No web hosting or other internet-related services are needed at this time, thank you though.

I think some people here are confused and think the landlord is jacking up the rent suddenly. It sounds to me like the rent is staying about where it always was (maybe a slight increase), but until recently HUD has been paying most of it, and they've suddenly stopped. The landlord has suddenly seen the regular rent not get paid.

Craig, please do call McDermott's office and fill them in. They're "expecting" to hear from you.

Very disturbing thread.

Someone mentioned:
[ QUOTE ]
"I swear if you call the right person, at least from my experience there are always exceptions to the rules, alternatives, there is no definite answer to any public aid programs."

[/ QUOTE ]

I could not agree more. I have a possible approach that takes a different tack than going through HUD or your landlady.

<DISCLAIMER/RANT>
I am not a lawyer and am not offering legal advice. Also I am disabled myself so my following rant about the 'Americans With Disabilities Act' is not as knee-jerk as it sounds and I have a very legitimate right to criticize it.

The 'Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990' is a totally wrong headed piece of legislation that NEVER should have been passed at all.
<END DISCLAIMER/RANT>

Having said that I must also mention that it is the 'Law of the Land' and there may be something in it that may help you. It was a very wide ranging piece of legislation. As with most modern legislation, it is thought out and written so poorly that it probably contradicts many other laws and Federal departmental policies, but it is the law.

I believe that the quote at the top of this post is right on the money and I think that you should read every word of the AWD Act.

Are there any lawyer types out there who have any familiarity with the AWD Act?

Just my thoughts. Good luck.

Sorry I did not get back here sooner, got work and class to deal with and on the east coast of the US.

From what I read it, Craig missed an appointment for HUD, who helps him pay his rent, so in turn they are refusing to pay for several months causing him a differene to make up and like robots those who run the property he lives on follow procedure of threatening letters and what not.

When I wrote my congressman, they basically sent a letter to teh rehab center for the blind. I was living there and as mentioned in the story things seemed hopeless ther eunless I wanted to go to a nursing home or live back with my parents. Basically the comission asked to see me and we went over the letter. I have no idea if my congressman read it, or care, I just know they almost copied what I said to them to step in and help me get help with going to college to further my education as I was accepted at a local comunity college. That is when the computer test on paper and the internship was performed. Then the deputy comission, not anyone related to law enforcement interviewed me before i found I was going to get help for college as far as equipment was concerned, support and aid for the fees involved. Luckly finanical aid has paid a great part and then gave me several grand to live off of during the semester. There is always the HOPE credit for you guys who fall in a gap who can not get finanical aid or afford it. But its well worth it, get an associate degree or two.

When it comes to money, they or most are willing to take something over nothing. Best bet is to communicate and be hinest about it. Do not give out any account information over the phone or they will suck you dry. Just tell them about HUD as they are likely not to know and go from there. Still work on HUD to find an appeal process as most government agencys has one. I believe its a green form or grivence(SP?) Even if you are SOL, you should still report them. Worse to worse, you may end up appearing before an administrative judge, but if you are in the right, they will file in your favor.

I dont know why, but its my experience that most employees that work for a government agency are indifferent to serving someone. I almost think they get a kick out of screwing people over by giving them inaccurate information or being of little help at all. I know the social security agency the 800 number and local offices are the best at giving inaccurate information and being rather rude. THey had one line one day for all questions no matter how insignificant and the women had a horrible schrill voice that echoed throughout the place. When using the phone its frequency busy and difficult to get anyone of help unless you get an extension of someone. Ive had several problems with over payment issues as I worked while receiving benefits which is allowed, but was giving wrong forms and inaccurate information on reporting my income and finding out a few years later i owed several grand. I just started a job in May, did the paper work, called the 800 number a few times, read the books online and emailed them. The email was a repeat of the brochures. The 800 number 2 operators said I need to fax my pay stubs in. After faxing them in received a letter 3 weeks later from my local office that i need to mail them in. Man, I am going to owe them several grand again due to no fault of my own and they frankly dont care why, they want their money back and will give younothing to live off of. Luck the past two times I appealed the decision to a % of my income so I can exist while making mends.

Most excellent insights. Glad you joined. Happy you are here.

paulr -

Would you consider posting a non-content outline of your letter? Would you mind if the outline was used as a flexible template for successive letters? Of course, all letters/faxes/communications should be cleared by Craig.

There is still time to challenge the decisions.

My letter to McDermott basically said a little bit about Craig and what happened to him, and asked if McDermott's office could help him. I don't consider its contents confidential but I think it's best that people wanting to write to Craig's legislators write their own letters from scratch. When Congressional staffs get numerous similar letters about one issue, they smell astroturf and it works against the cause.

I got off the telphone with Quest or US West or whatever the F they call it, and arranged to have my phone service moved and a new jack installed at my new location on 10-11-04. So I'll only be offline for a day or two at most.

I also called SSA and had them update my new address so my checks won't become lost.

Sometime this weekend, I'll be packing up the ProMetric and getting the laboratory computer ready to be moved, so if you need ProMetric or battery discharge analyses done on something, it's now or after October 10th.

Last chance to request ProMetric or battery discharge analyses of something.
This stuff is going to be packed away this weekend, and won't be available until at least 10-11-04; more likely after 10-18-04.

I met with the building manager this morning, and the latest I can turn in my key and electronic passcard thingie is 10-18-04.

I've been wanting a runtime graph of a standard 2D incandescent flashlight to use as a baseline, since those are about the most common type of flashlight out there. Any chance of one of those sometime?

Does it get dark at night where you're going (no streetlights)? I hope you find it friendlier than the old place.

I think a runtime on a 2d, like that cheap Eveready 2d would be a good idea if you find a couple good batteries of any chemistry for it.

I currently do not have the D cells for this particular analysis; sorry about that.
Somewhere around here though, I do have a typical cheap Eveready 2D incandescent flashlight. Let's see if it's anywhere nearby...BRB...there, found it. And the batteries in it are good - they measure approximately 2.25 volts open circuit each. Guess I'll start that analysis now.

Turning lab computer monitor on...rebooting in DOS mode...changing directory to where meter program is...turning DMM on...running RS.EXE...creating meter file "ENER2D.ME1"...scaling to 600 seconds...positioning flashlight and PV cell...starting test...OK, the test is officially underway. Assuming I don't queer the test by bumping something I shouldn't bump, the machine should poop out a chart when the batteries in the flashlight croak.

2.25 volts open circuit each?!! Those aren't normal D cells. Are you sure you don't mean for both cells, in which case they're nearly dead already? Anyway I can send you some D cells if you want, but that may take long enough that it's best to wait til after the move.

I don't know how close the nearest streetlights are, but it does get considerably darker there than it does here.
I'll try to take nighttime photographs of the beams of some of the brighter flashlights and maybe even some lasers, and post them on my website.
The crime rate (at least at night) is said to be very, very low, so taking nighttime photographs should not be too problematic.

The open circuit voltage was measured at 2.25 volts OC *each*.

They're Radio Shack alkalines; I don't know that they're special in any manner.

I started the test a few minutes ago, so I cannot remove and re-test the cells without queering the test.

As of 7:31pm PDT, the flashlight is still chugging along.
It started with an arbitrary reading of 0.68, then dropped within ten minutes to approximately 0.36.
It is now at 0.25.

(Edit 8:40pm PDT)
The studly little vacume is...I mean, the studly little flashlight is still going.
If it poops out before about 10:00pm PDT, I'll post the chart here tonight; otherwise I'll post it here tomorrow morning.

(Edit again, 9:49pm PDT)
It's still going, so it looks like tomorrow morning before that chart will be ready.

Can you check a few other batteries with that same voltmeter? 2.25 volts OC is nuts.

Let me go get a couple of Energizer alkaline C cells that I know haven't been used but are a couple of years old...BRB...ok one measures 2.19 volts and the other measures 2.30 volts. Both measurements were taken open-circuit.
I used a Circuit Specialists DMM on the +20 volt scale.

Yikes, that meter sounds way off. Do you have a voltage reference you can check? Can you test it against another meter? Anyway it doesn't really matter that much, I'm just wondering how those D cells are doing.

The other meter I have ready access to is currently connected to the battery discharge analysis machine, and a test on that equipment is currently in progress. O wait, let me check one place that may have a meter...BRB...well, it isn't where I thought it might have been.

Let's see if the test leads from this meter will reach my benchtop DMM (a Fluke 8000A) without ruining the test running directly below it...BRB...the ends of the test leads are incompatible with the receptacles on that meter. Let's see if the leads to a PSU mounted next to it fit, and can be moved without wrecking the test in progress directly underneath...BRB...ok, one cell measures 1.63 volts, the other measures 1.68 volts; both open-circuit.

Alkaline voltages typically run to the high point of 1.63 or so on my ancient RadioShak DMM.

FYI the "disposable" flashlight is *still* going. So I don't yet have a chart ready.

Looks like the flashlight has finally pooped out.
Let me disconnect the test set and get a graph done up...BBS...

Here's the battery discharge analysis of this flashlight.
Runs for approximately 20 minutes to 50% intensity, and 15 hours 20 minutes overall.
Radio Shack Enercell alkaline cells were used for this test.
