I'm hoping to order an o-sink whenever they're available for the D cell mags. Is the only mod necessary of the mag to cut down the reflector? What exactly needs to be done to it? Also, is there room inside my 3D to put a 5 watt resistor, without modifying the switch?

I recommend you cut the switch because it makes it easier to attach the wires. You could however get creative and try to join wires to the existing components, though. Cutting the switch also ensures that there will be room inside.

I agree with cutting the switch, else you'll NEVER get that strip of metal back into the assembly after you solder a wire to it. lol.
