With all the New Yorkers (Yawkers?) here I'm surprised October 27, 2004 passed unnoticed. Anyway, for those who don't hail from the Big Apple, and those who do but aren't into trains, yesterday the subway celebrated it's 100th Anniversary.

On October 27, 1904 the city's first subway line, from City Hall to 145th Street in upper Manhattan, a distance of 9.1 miles, was opened. Since then the system has expanded to 230 route miles, 656 mainline track miles, and 468 stations. It's no exaggeration to say that New York as it is would never have been possible without the subway. No other form of transit could move as many people as quickly, cheaply, and unobtrusively as the subway could. Hats off to an amazing engineering achievement which is still, and always will be, a work in progress.

Here is a great site for those interested in learning more about the subway.
