Who is the greatest F1 driver of all time and why? IMO, Michael Schumacher is the best becuase nothing ever seems to put him down. Not to mention the amount of races he's won. What do you guys think?

Hard to compare eras--And also greatest at their peak or for their entire career?

My 3-in no particular order-Fangio, Prost, Schumacher.

I agree. It sure is hard to compare eras. Maybe if Senna Didn't die, he would be on that list.

Schumacher. It's unreal to see him turn it on like a switch and thrown down fastest lap after fastest lap when he needs it. You see him do it time after time, taking advantage of pit strategy where necessary. He's also learned how to drive the car hard without blowing it up. LOL. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Fittipaldi has got to be in the mix.

No smilie, but I'm assuming you're making a joke? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Christian Fittipaldi drove 40 GPs, scoring 12 championship points (0.3 pts/GP).

Jim Clark: 2 titles, 72 GPs, 255 pts (3.5 pts/GP)
Ayrton Senna: 3 titles, 161 GPs, 610 pts (3.8 pts/GP)
Alain Prost: 4 titles, 198 GPs, 768 pts (3.9 pts/GP)
Juan Manuel Fangio: 5 titles, 61 GPs, 245 pts (4.0 pts/GP)
Michael Schumacher: 7 titles, 211 GPs, 1108 pts (5.3 pts/GP)

Even Takuma Sato...
Takuma Sato: 36 GPs, 39 pts (1.1 pts/GP)

Edit: Yes, I know you can't really compare points across different years/eras...but it's just illustrative to do so.

I think it was Emerson Fittipaldi being referred to. Emerson won 2 championship titles. One with Lotus and one with Mclaren.

Shummie I guess with 7 titles from two different teams. But I will always be impressed with Niki Lauda. Champion, then gets burnt, then champion again. Tough guy.

If we try to compare pure driving talent, it would be hard to pick one as there have been very good drivers that never had the opportunity to drive the best cars.

If your talking overall complete package, it would have to Michael Schumacher.

Ferrari would not be champions for 6 years in a row if not for the team that Schumacher built around him and stuck around because of him.

In this ERA it HAS to be Shumacher. Some of the saves he has made (seen thanks to little cameras) are amazing.

But at the time, guys like Clark, Fangio et al were pretty damn good.

Maybe put all the rest of the remaining F1 drivers in some sort of spec race with very little in driver aids and see who shines then?

As an Argentinian and F1 lover I must say:

JUAN MANUEL FANGIO

5 times champion in the glory days of F1.

My 3 all time preferences:

Fangio, Senna, Schumacher

Schumacher is the best so far IMHO, he has huge talent. It's always interesting to see how drivers can handle rainy conditions cause the power differences of the engines are out of the equation then, and Schumi likes the rain, he's really an exceptional driver.
