got leadlight for x-mas, short\'d pot, smok\'d tape!

Wow, got this leadlight for christmas and tried shorting pot and burned tape within 3 seconds! But applying the "old-school" resistor mod how many mW's will I loose? I know I can't keep shorting the pot because I am way overdriving the diode. P.S. man the fingerburn test is a *****!

Adjust the POT to max /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif then u got alot of power to play with /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Soldering a resistor is a easy way to broke your brand new laser .....

This is my second leadlight, and its is from thinkgeek.com It is about 5 times brighter than the crapy one i got from abe when I short each ones pot. Anyways, im looking for a steady output of this power so I want to solder the resistor. Btw, how would this break it so easily? either the resistor will work or it wont.

be careful when soldering the small parts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif if it get to hot u can burn off components on the driver board /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
but if done cerefully it`s no problem /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What do I solder the other end of the resistor to if one end is on the pot.

Careful, don't shoot your eye out.
A specular reflection can catch you off guard
pretty easily, and most housholds are full of
potential sources.

i did the stage 3 resistor mod with resistors from radioshack,they are bigger so you have to be very precise and good with small details but it worked good for mine
