Just got the kit today, and couldn't wait to get home from work to pla... er...Um... do some scientific experimentation. Lights up the end of my living room better than the original Mini Mag bulb, & a prettier beam. Simple in concept, elegant in simplicity. Somebody tell me, is it brighter than the Opalec? So do I, but in my 2AAA's I don't have anywhere near the output, which is due, I am sure, to the much smaller reflector.
This might be the one spot where an optic might be advantagous.
Anyone have any thoughts?

The Opalec would be all flood, no throw.

Comparing lux at 36" to the Opalec, the MJLED kills it. Not really a fair comparison because the Opalec is all flood - no hot spot to up the numbers.
I much prefer the MJLED to the Opalec - much whiter, much longer runtime, and it has throw too.
