Can you fabricate a new one from a little clump of thermoplastic from a crafts store?

I think the buttons are normally held on with a dab of adhesive since there's not much to attach to.
You can try out this stuff for a source of easily moldable plastic. Their free sample package ($4.95 shipping) is more than enough to make LOTS of buttons or other little widgets.

or find some small plastic that's brittle and you can break off the right size and super glue it? You could take it apart and try to solder on a new switch. It's probably a small Tact switch that you can get out of broken old school VCR's and TV's and stuff like that from behind the buttons. Some have really long pegs too..
