Has anyone tried the MAX1765 for LS applications where 1 to 3AA type cells are used and space is of no concern?

As you said: ... and space is of no concern - but space is always a problem. I also have downloaded the datasheet of this IC as it looks interesting. Another question: What shall we do with the LDO in our flashlights when we use the boost converter?

Well, if space isn't a concern, I suggest using solution with external MOSFET for efficiency and Maxim also got solution such as MAX608 in 8DIP package which a lot easier to handle.

There is enough space in a Petzl Zoom headlamp. As I see it, a typical LS (at least the one I used) at about 280mA requires about 3.3V. When used with the 4.5V supply of the Zoom, the MAX will act as linear regulator while V>3.3 and then as boost converter when V<3.3.
Still on that route of trying to squeeze max use of 3AA.
Any other advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
