Default Multi-level Tri-LuxIII FlexMag4C/SO20XA

Mag4C, UCL lens, 3xLuxIII TW0J stars + 3x IMS SO20XA reflectors, modamag’s PTS-C-cu heatsink, nFlex driver housed in custom made alu holder, switch modified to momentary pushbutton switch (off-on), running on 4xPila150A or 4xLIR 18500 batteries in a custom-made battery holder.

The copper heatsink is epoxied into the Mag head for better heat sinking.
nFlex driver reconfigured to 1000mA. The driver is not potted.

min Vin to keep the light in regulation = 12.5V.

Lumens output: 3x (67.2 - 87.4) = 201.6 – 262.2 Lumens.
Lux reading at 1m using Meterman LM631: 290 – 630 – 1270 – 2060 – 2910 – 3900 – 5050 - 6260 Lux.

Runtime (in regulation) was 110 minutes (uninterrupted) on 4x protected LIR 18500 (1500mAh) batteries (AW) at the highest level.

You can read more about the nFlex driver here.

Thanks for looking.

Is all that white stuff around the stars thermal epoxy? That's a lot!! Or is it GP epoxy. Is this a mag4c or mag2c?? confused there...

How do you remove the head, or you don't as the wires would twist since you epoxied the HS...

That "virgin white" stuff you see in the picture is crystal clear epoxy mixed with alumina oxide powder.
The heatsink itself is epoxied to the head using AA epoxy.

As you can read in the title it's a Mag4C.
You must be blinded by those yellow stars I guess...

To remove the head to get to the guts the wires to the leds have to be desoldered.

Icarus how do you think 3 stars would run on 4C alkies w/ a fatman? Sort of like a regulated version Tr-Star Phazer from Elektrolumens. I've heard good things about it, and the alkalines seem to run well in it.

EDIT: Except that the alkalines would be constantly pumping 700mA for example. Where without the fatman it would just follow a regular alkaline discharge curve right. I guess now that I think about it NiMh would be better...

Thanks Icarus.

I want to do a Tri-Lux mod and at first I was going to use a 2D with 6AA NiMh, but I don't like to bother with rechargables. I like the common availablity of Alaklines. Then I remembered about the Phazer, it runs 3 LED's on 4C Cells. I'm hoping to mimic that setup.

Ok, here we go...

3x TW0J on PTS-C; Fatman driver, bench supply

Measurements (Vin, Ie):
7.4V 0.99A
6.0V 0,89A
5.0V 0.74A
4.8V 0.70A
4.0V 0.58A

Same setup but now using 4D Duracell batteries.
Voltage without load = 6.7V

Measurements (Vin, Ie):
5.7V 0.72A (at the start)
5.5V 0.70A (after 2 minutes)

When load was applied voltage dropped immediately to 5.7V.

Conclusion: stick with your idea of using a Mag2D and 6AA NiMh batteries!

I just started playing with exactly this concept 4Cs in a 3D though. right about 6 to 6.5V is where the fatman will put out full power (1A) into 3 Jbin emitters.. so the 6pack is the way to go... but i would definitely install the low-volt protection so it shuts down at 6V.. can be done with a simple potentiometer i could figure out the values for you. i'm doing a similar build myself.

I wanted to be able to run 3 lux3 from 4Cs in a 3D but i'm only getting like 3000lux and it should be more like 4500+... so i'm going to re-work it to use 6AAs in a fivemega holder.

I've designed a new holder that will be more cost-effective than the FM holders but they won't be developed 'til middle of fall.. aiming to sell them for $20.. designed to work with 6AAs or 9AAs.. might be like $2 dif in price for the two.. like 18/20.

In the meantime AFAIK can't beat the FM adapters.

Andrew,

I'm going to do a simple DD setup (slightly resistored) with 3 C cells in a 2D M*g. I was going to use a fatman and get a 4C M*g, but I'm going to hold off any costly mods until the K2 comes out. This setup only cost me about $60.

The LED's are on their way...

Thanks for the info Icarus. I will get NiMh for this mod.

instead of a resistor solution you could put in an LDO and get better efficiency and more even light output.. http://ldo.rouse.com will get you to the cpf thread .. parts are like $2.
