NiCd charger conversion for NiMH

Is there a simple modification I can make to an older NiCd charger so it will also charge NiMH batteries? Is there a problem or danger if I use it 'as is' if I closely monitor the batteries with a VOM?

Nope. You could try fully discharging, and charging by time, but that's a lousy way to do things. To charge NiMH you need something that measures dV/DT, or rate of change of voltage with constant charging current. There are some $20 chargers that do a great job, people here (myself included) swear by the rayovac unit(s) sold at walmat.
