"Cogit ergo spud" (I think, therefore I yam) - Popeye.

"There you go again!" Ronald Reagan, as uttered to Jimmy Carter during a debate prior to the 1980 election.

"The most powerful force on earth is compound interest." Attributed to Albert Einstein in any number of places, but not conclusively proven. Still, even if he didn't say this, he should have.

Humor, like the blues, comes from suffering. Some of the most humorless people I've known have been those who have led a charmed life, had everything they've ever wished for, and had relatively few worries or crises.

Otoh, some of the funniest people I've known have been those who've had a tough time in life and/or work in stressful jobs.

Humor is a release. Look at the dark humor that is so common in emergency medicine and police work, two extremely stressful occupations. It helps one to re-establish one's equilibrium and keep a sense of perspective when the world is seemingly crumbling around them.

Humor serves a purpose. Even dark humor has a cathartic and healing aspect to it.

My favorite quote is in my tagline, but I'm not the only person here to use it. If you haven't clicked on the link, here are some of the major points.

    ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ!

Two little words. With these two words, two concepts were verbalized that have lived for nearly two and a half Millennia. They signify and characterize both the heart of the Warrior, and the indomitable spirit of mankind.
    (snip)
    Molon Labe! (mo-lone lah-veh)
They mean, “Come and get them!” They live on today as the most notable quote in military history. And so began the classic example of courage and valor in its dismissal of overwhelming superiority of numbers, wherein the heart and spirit of brave men overcame insuperable odds.
We have adopted this defiant utterance as a battle cry in our war against oppression because it says so clearly and simply towards those who would take our arms.
It signifies our determination to not strike the first blow, but also to not stand mute and allow our loved ones, and all that we believe in and stand for, to be trampled by men who would deprive us of our God-given – or natural, if you will – rights to suit their own ends.

Maybe the term favourite means a quote that has some wisdom in it ... that is able to express so much with so little words ... so that we need to admire it for its beauty, even if we do not let the content touch our soul.

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

EDIT: this was supposed to be a reply to Empath's post way above this one ... as I forgot there were additonal pages in the thread and replied in the middle of it
