UltraStinger - any other upgrades?

Hello all,

This is my first post as I am new to CPF.

After reviewing many threads, I would like to ask for upgrade suggestions for my soon to arrive UltraStinger. My first thoughts are either a WA1111 or WA1160 with an upgraded 3000mah battery pack. My goals are brightness and throw as I will rarely use the flashlight more than 1/2 hr at a time.

All suggestions are appreciated.

I just tried the new 3000mah battery and WA1160 bulb... the lens started to noticeably deform in the center after about 2 minutes... so took the bulb back out
(I am not brave enough to try the WA1111 bulb I bought)

battery seems to work fine - I have not checked the run time on factory bulb yet though

back to the drawing board for me...

I guess the wa1111 & wa1160 bulbs are out unless there is a way to get a glass lens. Good to hear that the battery is working for you so far. If you can determine the new run time please post.

According to Fivemega there is no way to replace the stock lens with a glass lens. I think it was because the lens must be able to flex a little, something a glass lens can't.

3000mah battery went about 2 hours with the stock bulb before beginning to dim very quickly... so I am happy with it's performance, specially since the battery was cheaper than a stock battery!

now I am just trying to figure out the charge time of the nimh using the stock charger so I don't overcharge it... any ideas?

still trying to get more light out of it too, w/o melting the plastic lens

Don't mean to butt in but I have an Ultrastinger. Where can I get one of those batteries that will run for 2 hours?

the CP's are easy - WA1111 bulb

the issue is keeping the plastic lens from melting... could remove the lens completely I suppose, which would help the thing stay cooler ;>

then I'd be concerned about melting the switch assembly/bulb socket!

Remember, the 1160 is a 5V lamp. When driven with 6V or more with a freshly charged stick, its output will be well over 500 lumens.

The 1111 might be a better bet for this light.

In either case, it is hopeless without a glass lens. I have just replaced my head assembly due to this experimentation.

I am trying to figure out how to get a glass lens mounted. Biggest problem is the lens, reflector and bezel on the US are essentially one piece, not designed to be replaced separately.

I know there are others here on CPF way more qualified than me to figure this out mechanically.

The claim is 295 lumens. Although the light is very bright, this might be a little on the optimistic side. I have no way to measure this.

With the WA1111 lamp it puts out just under 500 bulb lumens at 6V. Quite impressive with the exception of the melting plastic.

I need to make some measurements, but what about the possibilty of using JB-Weld to hold a glass lens in place after removing the plastic lens? I have used the standard Cure Time JB-Weld to repair a broken fresnel lens on a 400W K5600 Joker Bug HMI fixture. The quick setting JB-Weld has a lower temperature rating, and didn't hold as well, but one lens I patched has been going strong for over a year, and getting 3-5 hours of exposure per day.

I bought one of the BatterySpace batteries, and on the second charge/discharge cycle, I got 2 hours 15 minutes for the runtime before dimming with the stock bulb. I am at work now and I may have a chance to do another discharge time

This is the approach I am working on now. Flashlightlens.com has some gasketed 55mm lenses that might work. They are really a little to big to sit down in the bezel. I think if they were mounted on the end of the bezel, the grooved gasket just might allow for the replacement of the glass if broken.

I have also ordered from another source some 54mm glass windows that will sit down in the bezel.

In either case, I am thinking about using black RTV silicone. It should be good up to about 400F and can be removed later if needed.

Next issue will be the reflector and other internal plastic bits. Once all this heat is retained by the glass lens, who knows.

I saw the High Temp RTV at NAPA Auto Parts the other day also, and it would definately be a lot easier to replace than JB-Weld if it became necessary to replace a lens. It sounds like the the reflector is plastic as well. I will watch for updates on your results with the 54mm glass. Sitting inside the bezel sounds like it would be better protected than on the end.

now I am wondering if you guys tackled the problem of the melting lens and reflector. I have the 6 volt battery sticks now (custom) and just use an Ultrastinger bulb in the Stinger HP, but if I could get a brighter bulb that will work with 6 volt sticks without melting the lens or reflector, then I want to try it.

Just food for thought:

I find the 1160 much dimmer in a 3000ish mah NIMH US than a stock Magcharger with the 1160. This is even the case with a new switch assembly installed. Apparently the stock switch has higher resistance but I never took the time to measure the drop.
