It's been said by some that Thanksgiving, as practiced, is a celebration of excess.

Indeed, to a certain extent it is celebration of excess. Unfortunately, I have to place myself into the group that is guilty of such. It's not that there is fault involved with such festivals or rememberances, since a root of such festivities of abundance is found even in the arrangements of Jewish law, of which spirit is expected of today's followers of the Christ. If there be any fault, it's in the waste, and and often involved lack of consideration toward the less fortunate.

The above sites caught my interest, along with my personal regrets. As is said in some circles, "mirror's up".

The solutions aren't simple, particularly on a social, political, nor much of any group dynamics arrangements. The 'poor has been with us always', the same as the wealthy has, and will be. A measure of effort may be directed toward the situation, but the real responsibility is individual and personal.

Part of a suggestion once offered as an exercise toward acheiving perfection was 'sell all you have and give to the poor'. Very few could do it.

"Watered down", one could suggest 'sell your excess, and give to the poor'. More could do that, but still only a few.

It seems most suceed in discarding one's access as unwanted, and render it unavailable to any.

Lest any feel I'm preaching, it's more a matter of self-admonition. It seems "i succeed, but I don't".
Any that know what is said in that ->

For those that feel this is too "religiousy", I offer the roots of our holiday:
