Because without battery backups for our computers we would be left in the dark reaching down for one of the many flashlights we have close at hand in the event of a power interruption... :-P
Oh no... I just quoted an n - 1 post too :-O
Anyways, joking aside you do have a point. Especially when traveling I usually tether which, is not very fast. The worst feeling in the online world is when you enter a thread and noticed it filled to the brim with two photobuckets worth of pictures. That's usually when I give up until I'm home or I cancel the page load early and just read the text. I can't imagine trying to read most review threads on 56k

Re: [RANT] Quoting *ENTIRE* Posts (Including PHOTOS!) When Replying...
I agree its annoying, however when an image is quoted it is not "redownloaded" ie you don't take a double hit on your bandwidth.
You should consider a browser that enables you to not load images/load images/or only load images from cache. Makes a huge difference if you are on a slow connection.
And your post is directed at most likely "new to the internet"/"new to forum types"...your "math-esque" way is probably not the best way to reach that demographic

I agree completely. Even if the images aren't downloaded twice, they still take up space on the page and quoting long posts makes it hard to tell which part of the post someone is replying to. Snipping quotes to just the parts being replied to is a not-so-common courtesy, but it should be.

Sad to say it's not going away, the problem has been raised before by myself and others. I predict that the offenders will continue to offend
Also not wanting to be rude but this has nothing to do with batteries and shouldn't be posted here.
Most people scan more than just one area of CPF and the problem is right across CPF so why limit your audience?

He asked a good question. As a "new comer" he's probably thinking the same thing I am: Why is a thread talking about the way people reply in the battery section.
No. I agree with your OP.
In the end, all jokes aside, you're trying to fight a forest fire with a water hose. I'll go get some buckets!

Re: [RANT] Quoting *ENTIRE* Posts (Including PHOTOS!) When Replying...
If Greta could restrict exact same photo re-posting within the same thread ...
that would be good .
Just refer to the post number of the original pic if you need to reference it again in conversation .
I agree , casual quotes of entire long posts , and especially pic's , should be avoided ....... please .
When you use quote , you CAN delete the irrelevant parts that don't relate to your reply . (most of the time)
.

I believe that isn't really the point though.
It's UGD annoying when someone posts a reply with 15 photos sized 800x800 and some moron (and there's no other way of putting it other than "moron") replies "COOL IMAGES!" and quotes the whole damn thing. It's a royal waste scrolling time.

<REPLY>
<OPINION TYPE="CYNIC">
I agree too but you're not going to change anything regardless of the place you post the message. I'm a qualified computer engineer, and I too used to find the lack of respect for byte space taken in all areas of modern technology a bit dumb, but you know what? I've come to realise that times have changed. No one nowadays has ever had to defrag remove lines from config files to get a few extra bytes to save their files. In fact, by the time they run out of space they've bought a new and bigger drive.
Hay ho.
Also, its not obvious how to cut out bits of the post, you have to think about it.

Some people (as a matter of fact, a LOT of people) don't have a choice but to use dial-up.
You should see the broadband prices in the UAE for example.

Hi-light impertinent areas of the quote (click & drag) ...
And then hit "delete" ......... that simple .

Oh his post is VERY valid! But... what is that saying? ... glass houses... stones... ? When you are perfect yourself, then you can start ranting about others... know what I mean? Kinda like the spelling/grammar police around here who don't add anything to a thread except spelling/grammar corrections... and their own post is full of spelling/grammar errors...

I'm just trying to be a little jovial with ya .
You take a lot of grief from us .... I'm just trying to lighten it a little .... and kid with you a little .

Re: [RANT] Quoting *ENTIRE* Posts (Including PHOTOS!) When Replying...
Often the people quoting photo rows are kinda new so I just leave a friendly post asking them if they wouldn't mind editing their post. If I happen to come back in 24 hours and find that they haven't, then I send them a friendly PM. I find that folks are usually responsive if you don't act like a ramrod. (not saying any has, just speaking generally).

I give you two links. Both basically delete the [IMG] code in quotes leaving you with just a URL.
One and Two.

I will apologize now, because I am an offender. I'm a noob and still learning about things are done. Sorry everyone, especially dial up users.

On the "... glass houses... stones... ?" subject, I'd have to say, through observation of posting style, TTA (the OP) is pretty much on mark to being an exemplary poster. His choice of color can sometimes be a bit on the awakening side, but I think that's his intent. However, he is very succinct in his quoting of others, and very on-topic.
I agree with TTA 100%. Is his rant likely to change anything? Would me ranting about people at the gym who bounce all over the place doing one set at each do anything? On an initial large scale, not likely for either case, but it can get the point across to someone, anyone, and that can be a catalyst for change.

Re: [RANT] Quoting *ENTIRE* Posts (Including PHOTOS!) When Replying...
Yeah, that's probably just as bad as including pictures in a quote unless, of course, the post actually refers to the picture quoted. It happens a lot, and could be avoided if members would just familiarize themselves with the Forum.
I agree with the OP though. Quoting pictures without reason, does take up unnecessary space, and adds to the time it takes a page to load. I live out in the country, and only have 1536/512. I can only imagine how it affects dial-up members.
One thing that irritates me more than either of the above, is when a noob consistently posts 2 or 3 consecutive posts, referring to the same quoted post, within a matter of minutes. This requires more scrolling than is needed, as well. What's the deal? Is it some sort of effort to drive up the most meaningless member statistic, their post count? (Gotta love those cute little asterisks though! )
And then, some of these noobs have the gall to criticize other noobs for what is, in their opinion, similar behavior. I've noticed that these types often tend to come to the Forum with their own set of demanding rules, probably because they were run off from some other Forum. Cracks me up.
Everyone starts out as a noob. I just don't really see how the Richard Cranium approach helps one get started though.

5+ years ago these forums forced me to go from twisted pair to cable.
I am glad they did.

Ehhh, I like to use quotes only if I am referencing something specific the poster said. That actually "saves" scrolling time....

I have done it before, but not often. My problem is, I don't know how to post just the snippet out of somebody's post. I have tried to do it, but haven't figured it out. Not everybody works with computers all day or has been to school to learn how. And before I get a bunch of comments about how easy it is, yes it is easy IF you know how. I haven't seen anybody explain how to do it in this thread, so how about some instructions guys? Can't speak for others but I will try to just post a snippet when I can.

Click on the "Quote" button at the bottom right of the post you want to quote. DO NOT click on the "Quick Reply" button (the one with the little sheet of paper and quill at the END, bottom right). This will bring you to the "Post Reply" page and you will see the entire post you are quoting in the reply box. Edit out the stuff you don't want to quote, keeping the stuff you DO want to quote. Add whatever you want and click the "Submit" button. DONE!
