Default Should light be left on or shut down when you leave desk?

Is it wise to leave the desklamp on most of day while you work? or should the light be turn off when you leave the desk for 2-3hrs?

I want to know if frequent shut off/on of light will cause contacts wear out faster?

If it's a halogen desk lamp. I would definitely turn it off when you're not using it. Waste of electricity and potential fire hazard. Actually, for 2-3 hours at a time I would turn anything off (except maybe if it uses a fluorescent bulb. Or LED's )

Captain, i have just posed the same question to Data, his reply, ....
"it would be illogical to leave the lamp burning, modern switches are rated at millions of operations"
