Default Trouble with 3way CFL

Hello,

Just started switching over to CFLs for my apartment I moved into, I love the white light and I like the lower electric bill.

However, I have a 3 way incandesant torchiere lamp that I love. Even sprung the money to get the nice 3 way CFL for it.

It didn't fit. I've tried 2 different brands of socket extenders and the best I got was (1 being the low setting, 3 being the high) [the first extender didn't work at all with the bulb]

1- doesnt work
2-works
3-works, but is the same amount of light as 2

if i take the shade off and bend the screw posts that hold the shade in place out so the bulb fits it works perfectly without any adapter. but when i use the extender so it can fit with the shade on, the 3 way stops working

I dont want to choose between saving money and having an ugly looking lamp (it looks awful without the shade) and having a lamp that looks good in the room, the man of the house (who thinks we should just keep the shade off because it doesn't matter....ha!) says its not worth the effort to drill out the holes on the shade because we dont have a drill bit that would work and it would probebly just screw it up.

Honestly, its not an expensive lamp it only cost us 13 bucks at walmart but everything i read online says the CFL should work fine with an extender so long as its not a halogen torchiere, which its not. the box clearly says "incandescent" I just can't figure out why the extenders dont work. the one that didnt work at all was plastic, the one that works on 2 settings but has no difference is porcelien.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Does the extender pass the two bulb-end contacts through or just one? If just one then you will lose 2 of the 3 levels.

I think you may need a special extender for the 3-way connection - I bet if you tried a 3-way incandescent bulb in the extender, it would work the same.
