You need to put handles either side of the URL, like this: [IMG]blah,blah(URL)etc,etc[/IMG]

I did, it comes out as a link instead. I even added it using the "Insert image" button, but it didn't work either.

Are you using a proper image-hosting site? You need to upload the image onto photobucket.com or a similar site. It looks like you are using yahoo, and I don't know whether or not that works.
