Default Lights on Big Ships

A few weeks back I was hiking along a coastal section of Washington State. All through the night, huge ocean-going container ships would make their way along the horizon with BLAZING bright lights illuminating their pathway for what must have been miles and miles ahead. From the colour temperature, it looked like some variant of a sodium vapor light. Anyone know what these beasts are, or have any source for additional info?
