Default Indoor Lighting

Hi guys I'm new here. I have an urge to make some kind of indoor LED lighting, of which I have some ideas but need some help with certain things.

First off, I have moderate electrical know how, and can solder, etc. I've made a few led mod items. (dog collar, flashlight, emergency led candle) What I'm wondering, is what LEDs are there that would have a wide enough output angle for in home lighting?

Powering the lights wouldn't be that big of a deal for me, I don't need them to go on the ceiling or in incandescent sockets. I figure I could use an AC adapter rated at 9v or so. Would I want to go with luxeon, cree, or something else? Like I said, I kind of want it to be bright enough so that I don't have to turn on a regular light, but also have a wider output angle so it illuminates more of the room.

I'm also open to using 5mm LEDs instead of the powered ones. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Okay after doing some more research, I was wondering what you think of this as a light source for my project.

That should put out a ton of light I suppose. They also have a 140 degree output angle per emitter, so there should be a good area covered without a lens. I would definitely put something over it to shield the eyes from directly looking into this.

Welcome, those would be nice, let's not get crazy here though.

Go to Mouser and find the Seoul led's. Find a nice P4 in some 3000K (incan like) or 4000K (flourescent like) range. They will be around 5 or 6 dollars. Get a Microdrive9 or one of the nice Xitanium transformers.....doesn't matter which one or what power. (theledlight or ledsupply has good, really good prices on the transformers)

Glue 1 through 6 of them in series (just guess on the brightness for now) on something metal for heat sinking (old flourescent fixtures are great for this). Power it up and see what you think.

I'll give you a hint, if you want night time kind of mood lighting, 6 will be to bright. I have 6 running at I think 700mA and it is to bright and I can't remember if I used microdrives that I can move the wire to lower output to 350mA so I either need to unsolder a couple of leds or get another transformer.

In case you aren't following. For your first project. Keep it simple, keep it stupidly simple and you will get a good idea on what to do next time. Once you do this you WILL be doing it again. You need to get your feet wet, see how the gluing thing works, modifying fixtures, ect.....then, you can go from there.

If you have the cash, get one of the Archie, 120VAC led's that Seoul has from Mouser (at the bottom of the page) and let us know how it works. Looks vantastic but pricy, but solves alot of problems. I just keep going with my good old P4's from Mouser......reasonable cost there.

OK, let us know what you decide to do.

Hello:

1st post too!

New here and also looking to build an indoor lighting project.

Ideally I want to replace the one over our kitchen table w/ an LED version.

3000K color is approximately that of an incandescent, correct?
