Default White LED innovations (10 W)

http://compoundsemiconductor.net/mag...rticle/9/6/3/1

"White LED makers are making strides to improve the color consistency, white light quality, lifetime, efficiency and cost of their products....

Hiroyoshi Ogawa, a senior manager with the Optoelectronics Product Division at Nichia, described the company's power package roadmap, which calls for packages that can handle an input power of 1-3 W during 2003 and 10 W by 2005."

It appears that Luxeons have some serious competition!
We can look forward to some very efficient torch technology in the future!

10 watts in a torch/flashlight might be a bit much, since it would tend to increase the number or size of batteries and decrease the run-time.

I think both Nichia and Lumileds are in a race to increase the brightness in order to crack the automotive market where volumes and profits await. When they get there, we'll all benefit due to decreased prices and higher light output.

Hmm...Well, I've a spotlight here that's rated at 55W, and another at 7.5, so it's not all that bad really. Especially as you'll be able to "use" more of the battry power with an LED before the light dims beyond usefulness.
