thanks, Paul. I was afraid of that. The combination of my sig and my avatar is now down under 0.5K and the total height of my sig is now only 20 pixels.

Dude! Can't read it. I always thought your actual "signature" was pretty classy. Now it looks like you squished a bug.

OK, last change for awhile - animated avatar now 1.2K brings the total, if I use the 20 pixel high .sig, to less than 1.4K overhead for a post, and absolute minimal screen real estate used.

That <1.4K load should only happen the first time someone gets one of my posts. After that, assuming the browser is properly set up, the images will come from the .local caché.

1.2K for an 80X80 animated GIF with a color image embeded (that's me, and it blinks) is some nice tight packaging. I could get it down a bit farther, but I'd loose what little definition there is in my pic.

Ciao!

OK, Here are some of my recent avatars. I have my own opinions of which are more representative, but which of these, if any, do you (yes, YOU ) feel best represent who you "see" in my words.

Meantime, I'll see if I can patch together something else that I find satisfying to me as an avatar.

Tom I like either the lightbulb guy or the small blinkin' picture of you. Tomas the homesteader circa 18...er 1973 may be a bit dated, and the "Amazing Tom, Sees All Knows All" flashbeam Face shot, while cool, is a little creepy and may give me bad dreams. By the by your stickman seems to have had a few too many, maybe you should cut him off or get him in a program!!

Tomas, I've checked on 3 different computers now (but all were using IE6) and if those 2 newer avatars are supposed to be animated, they don't for me. I always thought the "retro" avatar was neat. They all are good though. How's that for wishy-washy?

*Edit* OK, I see the blinking eyes now. That's very subtle.

BF, I tried to make the one with the tiny pic of me very subtle - on of those things where your perhipheral vision says "I saw something!" and it takes a while for your brain to agree that something really did move ... You have 1/10th of a second every 3.5 seconds to catch it. It could be months before you just happen to see the image blink, then not be sure that you weren't playing games with yourself until you saw it again.

I used to have a page on line where every image was animated, but few were noticible - some would only change like once a minute, and then just be a subtle change like a portrait smiling instead of looking serious. I used to like the comments I got on that because the changes were so slow and random it took people a LONG time to believe things really changed.

I guess I should just leave my current avatar for awhile since it is a very efficient use of space and bits.

(In case anyone is interested, this is the full image that the one folks are calling "The Frontiersman" is taken from - My father and I in Seattle in 1973 ...

Well, FWIW Tomas...

I was disappointed to see "The Frontiersman" ave go!?! The full image with your pop is Awesome. Makes me want to go have a similar one taken with my two boys for posterity! The 'lightbulbman' would be a distant second.

Also the sig name is waaaay too small!

...and put the 'chop' mark back while you're at it.

Me? Critical? Hell, no!

OK, went back to my "frontiersman" avatar (though changed a bit ... ) and revamped my .sig to put my 'chop' back on it, and to make it a bit larger - sort of an average betrween the old one that gave some folks heartburn, and the tiny one that others complained about. It, also, is animated (12 second cycle), but still only 419 bytes.

I'll leave everything alone for awhile, now. I think I'm more or less "happy" with these - at least they reflect "me."
