Quantum dots: Sandia's new LED phosphor

Jul 14, 2003 - "ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- In a different approach to creating white light several researchers at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Sandia National Laboratories have developed the first solid-state white light-emitting device using quantum dots. In the future, the use of quantum dots as light-emitting phosphors may represent a major application of nanotechnology."

Very cool. And since they're working with LumiLeds, one can presume that yet another new avenue for Luxeon progress opens up. Getting an efficiency of up to 60% is pretty excellent, especially compared to the existing methods of generating white light.
