Taiwan makers to begin white LED volume production by end of 2003

"Taiwan’s LED manufacturers will reportedly be able to start producing white LEDs by year-end. They hope to benefit from increased demand created as more mobile phone makers choose white LEDs for their backlight panels and lighting sources, said industry insiders.

The sources said that Taiwan’s LED makers are now seeking ways to avoid infringing on patents owned by Japan-based Nichia. At the end of March, Nichia denied reports that it had licensed LED patents to Taiwanese companies...."
