Hi Chop

I was wondering about the same thing as I am also concerned about charging these babies so I did a bit of shopping and some detective work. I went to a few places today and finally found someone who keeps the Panasonics, when I asked if I could buy a couple he said No, he said reason being if it blows up in my face he does not want to be held responsible then showed me an exploded shell and the hole half way through his office door. Ooookaaaaay I said and then tried to convince him if he gives me the right setup (being battery and charger) I will not do anything silly. Nope he says BUT I can sell you this.

This being a Lithium-Ion 3.6 to 7.2 Volt Universal Battery Quick Charger and a battery pack for JVC BN-V712U/V714. I take it this is for a JVC Camcorder, he tells me the battery im after is inside the battery pack and if I pull it apart he has no comeback as he sold me a safe setup. By the way this Battery pack is 3.6 Volts Li-ion 1850 mAh, so I pulled it apart and here are some pics

Quick Charger with Battery Pack

Battery after I pulled it apart

As you can see the Battery has a circuit board attached, I would say this is something to do with protection for charging which means I will have no problem sorting out a charging system for this battery including the circuit board. Two things are yet to be sorted out, 1, I have to know that this battery is safe when operating without the attached circuit board in my Surefire (I think this should be no problem) and 2, The battery is 18mm thick (oops it may be a tight fit in my Surefire but im still waiting for the flashlight to arrive. To be continued

The naked lithium-ion battery would make me nervous since even factory batteries with all the protections have problems.

Check this CPF thread with a short news item, for example.
