Default Christmas tree lights...£3.14.

Wandered into Tesco today...spotted some christmas tree lights on a shelf, observed that they were standard incandescent ones, and walked on...before there was a massive double-take on my part, and I nearly walked into a newspaper stand.

Indoor sets: 20 light clear/coloured, £1.20, 40 light set, £3.14.

Given how expensive anything seems to be around here with the word "light" in the title, how could I resist? Bought one of the 40 light coloured sets...will probably go back buy another three or so tomorrow!

Only real annoyance is that they're actually on a loop of wiring, rather than the usual strand. So I can't really put them around the door to my room as I had intended. But heck, at that price, I may as well just extend the wire on the return side of things and make it work!

Will stop by tomorrow and get the full pricelist, there were some low voltage outdoor sets there as well. Also priced reasonably as I remember.

Just thought I'd mention this here, as I nearly missed it too, but if I remember rightly, these are CHEAP. (Seem okay quality too).

Is that right - per bulb the 40-sets are more expensive than the 20s? I`d have thunk it would be the other way up. Putting aside the larger number of plugs needed, the 20s seem like better value. You can always put two in paralell into one plug too, there`s room - and you get a free plug for something else too!

Those prices don`t seem so good when you realise that folks in the States who live near a Target or Hobby Lobby can often get 100-bulb lights for a buck-eighty-five, and sometimes a matter of 10 or 20 *cents* in the post-holiday sales. For this country, that price isn`t bad though. Almost certainly it`s a choice of clear or multicoloured, right? I`m still waiting for the day when sets of single colours become more common. Clear is boring and multi just looks disorganised, but blocks of things like blues and greens look very classy and quite distinctive I think. That`s how I like to do it here. Actually you can - just double them up. Go out 20 bulbs, then loop the returning half back so those bulbs fall in the gaps between. Add a cable tie or two to secure. Or if you`re feeling adventurous, secure the plug end somewhere, er, secure, and stick the little loop at the other end into a battery drill. Fire away for a few seconds and they should stay twisted together. OK so it shortens the length, but still should reach round your door.

True enough on that observation...never thought about that one regarding them being more expensive per bulb. Guess I'll have to grab a few of the 20 light sets!

Figured out the loop issue, just snipped the loop at the plug end of one strand, and wired in a "return" line, not around the door, but in a corner anyway...maybe not permenentely, but for the time being.

Wish we had lights as cheap here as in the US...
