Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
We're home now too! ... WOW!!... My head is still spinning from all of the VERY NEAT stuff that we saw this weekend... including Al's shoes! ... Someone has pictures of my shoe next to Al's shoe... I hope they post it. It's incredible!
I'm still trying to make my way through the forums and see what all happened here while we were away so I'll post more later.
But for now, I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Jeff and Peter for the wonderful get together last night. Peter for footing the bill... Thanks Peter! and Jeff... great job, my friend! As always, you truly know how to throw a party! ... For those of you who didn't know it, Jeff (MrTedBear) arranged the whole get together starting with getting the time share at the Fairfield Resort and then arranging for us to have a nice lounge for our party. Then he arranged for all of the food... (sent Charlie out to hunt and gather.... ) and purchased all of the beverages and set the whole thing up for us. Jeff, I for one, can't thank you enough for your time and efforts... and the Absolut Citron...

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Beretta,
the Beretta display was probably the largest of the main stream vendors, roughly 30 feet wide and a good 80 feet long. One end was all their shot guns and the other was pistols and rifles.
Though I am not a big fan of Beretta, they put on a nice display. They showed two of their precision rifle systems, nice, needs to be shot a little to loosen the bolts. Their carbine is a work of art. They designed it with the flashaholic in mind. Three forward picatinny rails and one main for various scope systems and eye reliefs. Very impressive. This was a big step for them and I think over time will be very successful. The left handed shooterr will appreciate this system more than the right hander. The weapon converts quickly and efficiently to left handed ops. Very, very nice. Sorry, no pics.

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Just got home myself and what a zoo at the airport! Sheesh! Ran into Shelby at the airport and had a nice chat with him while he was waiting to get on his way. The party last night was great and my thanks as well to Peter and Jeff and all who came.
PK is wearing an E2D on his badge. I tried to get a good shot of Al's shoe but the camera's depth of field couldn't handle the two time zones he foot was in! It takes a full bison hide just to make one shoe upper for him!

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
The other firearms guys were there as well. Bushmaster has released a new line of precision 7.62 rifles, way cool. Bushmaster recently purchased Professional Ordinance and has upgraded the entire line. Imagine an M4 that ways in just over 5 pounds.
Springfield showed with their new M1A, the SOCOM 16. At a glance it is similar to the Scout series. The gas tube has been altered, the muzzle brake is sexy, and the forward post is trijicon. Ships in April/May.
Nothing notable from Glock. All companies ahve new pistol lines, but I didn't look into them, though taurus has a new design that is supposed to be very ergonomic.
Other than Beretta, none of the rifles were really set up for lighting. This is especially disappointing for the SOCOM 16 which is lauded as a CQB rifle. The engineer said they are working on rail systems to address this. They are having some difficulty since they do not wish to weaken the stock. They have some good ideas though.

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Thanks for the great description. Hopefully some of the juicy details on the new stuff will be in the catalog.
I got a teeny tiny bit of info from the Beretta forum, but I don't think to check there too often as this is the crowd I'd rather hang with.
I'm off to bed, but if anyone has any neat pics, let me know and I can up the quota on my e-mail if need be.
Thanks again!

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Another surprise was that Swarovski hasw a light for the camper/hiker. Unique in appearance, oval, not round. Has two options for heads. All polymer. Was so fascinated by this I forgot to look at the scopes, the heart of the company.
Streamlight has made some interesting innovations in the headlamps and rechargables. Very solid company with solid product.
Surefire has some great stuff that has already been elaborated on.
ARC released its ARC4. I am not qualified to review this system because it is not practical for tactical operations, where I need the light. It is interesting because it is programmable and offers varying lights with touch combinations. That is amazing considering its size.
I had the opportunity to talk with with John Goncz at his booth. He is a believer. He has many models, including a 3 (triangle side by side) model. He had it regulated down because of a fairly common phenomenom, people look into it as they turn it on. I think they are 3 watt leds. So I am unable to comment on its brightness. He had other lights that were bright though not necessarily pleasing to the eye.
Innova had some cool stuff, especially for Public Safety/Search and Rescue/Hiking. The 24/7 is a multi colored LED system with 8 positions. Low light, bright light, flashing light, flashing red amber, SOS signal, and a 300+ hour dim strobe that would be visible to aircraft.

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Oooh! The Socom 16, man that is a cool weapon! Reminds me of the old BM 59 in the mountain carbine version. Hopefully I'll get to check that out at the NRA convention this year. Very interested in the XD series pistols too, anything new there (calibers, compacts, etc..) Chengiz? Sorry to go OT but the mention of Springfield made my mind perk up.

I have some shots of Al's shoe net to *somebody* else's shoe, but it wasn't one of Sasha's sexy ones. I'll post it later and see who claims it.
Chengiz saw all kinds of neat stuff - you wouldn't believe how easy it is to lose him when his walking *with* you through one of these things.

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Ditto to Sasha's comments, thanks Peter and Mary (ARC) for the purse, and the caterer Jeff (tedbear) who gets the dirty paws but little else. Jeff provided a nice location and everyone was able to mingle with CPF'ers and non CPF'ers.
My apologies to Larry, I did not get to visit with him at all.
Brian has just returned from somewhere in Iraq and was able to visit with us. I think we have a modder in the making. Brian didn't hump a rifle over there but was a technician. Trevor showed Brian the in and outs of the Arc4. Trevor lost me at driven at something or another. Brian knew what he was talking about.
Trevor (Aragorn) seems to have adjusted from the laid back life of the Carolinas to the high tech convention world. He did look a little frazzled this morning but with time he will learn to enjoy these brakes. Actually you could see the fatigue in almost all of the vendors, I forgot that they have to jump through hoops to present their product on time. I am sure everyone will take a well deserved rest so they can be ready for next year.

Cool stuff--looks like I'm going to stay broke the whole year
Might be a little off-topic, but did anyone happen to go by the Spyderco booth? The Spyderfly is supposed to be out this month and I was wondering if they had their "grand unveiling."

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
TSG,
the SOCOM is very nice. I am a rifleman first and any M14 variant gets me perked up. I am hoping to get a SOCOM to compliment my M21. It is heavy like it should be, shoulders nicely and that trijicon grabs the eye. Unfortunately it is SOCOM in name only, the military version has a collapsing stock and pistol grip.
From what I remember, the XT is now in compact in .40, 9mm, and I think they are working a .45. Taurus has a a .357 that is polymer to the grip which is hard rubber. I would like to have seen how they managed combining the two materials but I got distracted by the SOCOM and Bushmasters latest line.
Before I can get either I will have to pony up a Beretta carbine for Sasha. It sucks when the better half shares your interests.

... yeah it does. While packing up our collective lights for the show, I realized that we pretty much had two of everything... his and mine. So I had to tie little blue ribbons on all of mine so that we knew who's was who's... pretty pitiful... ... But at least there will be only one Beretta carbine in the house...

Sosh, why the ribbons? Are your and KC's lights not the same? Or perhaps there are "special touches" in yours (sachets of perfume inside with the batteries)...heh heh.
Great to have met you both.

Back home now. It was great meeting all of you either at the show or at the get together. Tried to meet everyone and I think I missed a few of you. Bumm, I didn't get a chance to ride the segway that was there.

Actually, I think Al is Size15s because he wears size 15 shoes. That pic looks right. Do you think Al's dancing partner gets nervous?
Sasha,
So you like that carbine? Was it the Storm? The local PD has Ruger .40 cal carbines in their vehicles now. They are similar to the Beretta, but not quite as nice.
One of the first things they teach is to watch your muzzle sweeps. I bet Charlie ducked awful quick!

Re: SHOT Show 2004 Las Vegas HAPPENING
Beretta... yes, it was the Storm. And yes, I like it ALOT!! It's perfect for my size... (not very tall... as was pointed out to me MANY times this weekend... ). I prefer it without all of the "stuff" on it though. There were two that I was eyeing at the show. One with all kinds of rails and "stuff" mounted on it and then the completely stripped down, clean one. I liked that one. Of course, while I was trying it on for size and comfort, this was when Charlie came upon me and even with a name badge on that said my name was "Steve", Charlie said, "It figures that the first time I meet Sasha, she's holding a gun"... To quote the Duke in one of his feature films in the '60s as the character that he was portraying similarly found himself somewhat looking at the bidness end of a shoulder weapon: <font color="blue">"...windage and elevation." </font>
