Default Happy Eyes not that cool.

I guess having a color temp near the sun comes at a price.
Those things get hot as all hell. I saw a Happy Eyes lamp at a Sharperimage store in the mall. I don't know if it was turned on for a long time because it was a display, but men was that thing hot. I had my hand 5" away form the lamp and I still got a burning sensation. The book that you might be reading may be 12",13",14" away from the lamp but your head is much closer to the lamp. I am not trying to offend any one that likes these fluorescent lamps, this is just my opinion. One more thing do they make cooler lamp that has the some color temp?
Thanks alot

I have two of these in my office, and they work great with no heat problem. Since I am in AZ this would be a concern, but we use them all the time, sometimes leaving them on all day with no negative heat issues.

So what do you think was wrong with that lamp in the Sharperimage store?

I dunno, maybe we are just more used to heat in AZ. It is a 27w bulb, so feeling heat from 5" away is not surprising. I don't have mine positioned 5" away from my neck. I will leave it on all day today and take a temperature reading later and report back here.

Go to WallyWorld and buy a G-E "Reveal" (old name = Enrich) bulb. You'll pay a fraction of the cost of those full spectrum incandescents. Made of neodymium (sp?) bluish glass (used to be called "jeweller's lamps" because they made the gemstones sparkle in the display case). Same idea, filtering out the yellowish rays to push the color temperature towards that of sunlight.

They run hotter than regular incandescents because they're blocking a lot of the yellowish energy and turning that into additional heat.

I placed a black plastic object 5 inches directly under the light. After 3 hours I measured the surface temperature with my IR thermometer... it reads 85 degrees.

That doesn't seem too warm for 5 inches away. Kind of soothing really
