Default Desk Light....need some pointers

I am in search for a light to go on my desk. I have an oversized desk, that is quite large. I would like something that can cover an area about three feet wide (hopefully more) and at least a foot or two deep. Bright is good! I would prefer flourescent or LED.

Any ideas?

OK I'll put in my 2˘ worth since no one's replied. A standard high quality fluorescent or halogen such as these Luxo lamps. LEDs are not quite there yet for this application. I know I'll catch heck for that statement.

Thanks for posting, this thread is kinda errie. Those Luxo lights look quite nice.

I think LEDs might actually be really good, if there was a long string of 5 watters....$$$$$ though. Luxo's sound good for now.

I've had a lot of desk lamps and I've concluded for my needs that a compact fluorescent is best. Costco sells something called an OttLight that us a 13 watter, but puts out a LOT of light and stays cool. I actually prefer the light of a 50 watt or higher halogen, but these guys get too hot. Since my desk is full of papers, I keep thinking I have to shut the lamp off every time I go away, just to prevent a fire.

Have you looked at a workstation light? There's one called an Eclipse Workstation Light that I've heard really great stuff about.

I've spent a good deal of time researching this topic as well. I haven't found the perfect light yet. The Luxo lights look OK...but I wanted something with a magnifier on it for close work. I also decided I wanted fluorescent because halogens get too hot.

I was looking at the electrix fluorescent magnifier lamps...they seem to fit the bill, but I'm not sure how bright they are.

If you like full spectrum lighting...(i.e. ottlites) these look pretty good and are a lot brigher:

Let us know how your search turns out. I've been looking for a while.

For some reason I completely forgot about Dazor right here in St. Louis, until I drove by them today.

BTW I, personally, do not like Ott lights.

Right next to me right now, I have a chinese-made flourscent desk lamp that uses a 27 watt bulb. It's a Sunpentown "EASY EYE" desk lamp. This lamp however is pretty hard to find right now but I think a similar,if not identical lamp would be the Verilux "Happy Eyes" desk lamp.
It lights up part of my "L" shaped desk right now but I can tilt the head back a little more (It has a gooseneck) if I want to light the other half of my desk.
Easy Eye Lamp.
Note: mine is and older model and has the on/off switch on the base. This one has a dimmer switch on the neck

On the other hand, you could always hang a 4 foot shoplight with 2 of your favorite brand of full-spectrum tubes above your desk and have a lot of light to work with.

Hint; If you're right handed and use a desklamp, put the lamp on the left side of your desk. That way, you hand dosen't cast a shadow over the page as your write
