edit, Petrol!? wonder if tis is the original generator engine for it, British ones have Lister diesels typically.

I'd think you can still buy the carbon rods for it these days. They're pretty common for various purposes.

We used to see these things at grand openings and things when I was a kid. If no one was looking, you could spit on the lens and watch it crakle and pop as it vaporized. There was no way I'd do that now-a-days!
I was dissapointed to trace down a recent grand opening. They had 4 little lights only a foot or so across mounted on a interesting framework. No generator, no fumes. It was nowhere near as impressive.
