Re: Hyundai HCD8 LED Headlights
Very short article showing design concept. Only an estimate on when they would show up in a production vehicle (2007-08), but that could be overly optimistic. You will probably need 1,000lm output array of LED's to get a beam pattern with enough throw/width, and uniform beam intensity to be acceptable for an auto headlamp. Then there is the problem with current Luxeon higher wattage LED's shorter lifespan. When higher efficiencies are available in higher wattage LED's we will probably see them used for auto headlamps. More reliable, smaller, and less costly as compared to the current 'trendy' high-output, glare monster 90lm/w HID's.
They will probably become the 'standard' for the foreseeable future, they work great as red rear brakelights now-except for the annoying glare/asthetically ugly look, which can be overcome later by using soft light diffusion lens covers when the higher output LED's hit the market in xxx years?
