Default Mitsubishi Display Breaks Record: 5,200,000 LEDs

Mitsubishi Press Release

"CYPRESS, Calif., March 23, 2005 — The world’s largest outdoor high definition display will greet and entertain Atlanta Braves fans at the newly renovated Turner Field this season. The 5,600 square-foot Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision screen, which will be recognized by Guinness World Records at a special ceremony on March 23, is 71 feet tall and 79 feet wide, weighs 50 tons and has more than five million LED lights....

The new display consists of 266 panels that each contains 20 lighting units, resulting in a screen with nearly 5,200,000 LED (light emitting diode) modules that can faithfully reproduce one billion colors, and be clearly seen from almost any viewing angle...."

Pretty neat. I also noticed from the press release - weighs 50 tons, and requires 60,000 CFM of air to keep cool. Pretty soon, they can turn off the lights and heating at the stadium and just use this thing.

Just for fun 5,200,000 LEDs x 20 ma x 3 volts = 300 KW. An afternoon at the game, 5 hours x 300KW x $ 0.10 / KWH = surprisingly only $ 150. worth of electricity.

Hey Raggie, post some beamshots of it!

Mitsubishi has a nice video processing engine behind their videowalls. I got to evaluate several manufacturers' products for another baseball stadium not too long ago and I liked the look of their boards.
