what light do boyscouts use?
I am sure you guys heard of terrible accident at boyscout jamboree where 4 adult boyscout leaders died in accident. The boyscout leaders were trying to setup a tent when the pole touch power lines.
Anyway, Do you guys know what kind of lights do boyscouts use nowadays?

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
Last time we went camping I saw a random assortment of 2D RayoVac's, one or two 5mm LED headlamps, and that was about it. At one point while waiting for the fire to die, the conversation turned to "the new hyperbright LED's"... ooooh, aaaaahhh.... I was all the time (Arc LS in my pocket and Peli M6) I didn't show off, however... I should be

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
When I was in the scouts 15+ years ago, we had a wide variety of stuff. Most of the scouts brought cheapie lights, usually 2AA or 2D. What every scout wanted at the time was the 2AA Mini Mag because it came with a belt holster and it was small and tough. Having a spare bulb in the tailcap was another really cool feature.
I ended up with a Brinkmann version of the Mini Mag. It worked pretty good until I dropped it a few times. The bulb was fine, but the internal contacts didn't survive. Not sure why. Bad design I guess. I still have the light even though it's completely useless.
I also used a Rayovac 2AA light that I won in a scout competition of some sort. It was just a cheap plastic light, but it got used a lot in some really rough conditions.
Hopefully someday I'll have a son of my own and I can get him involved in scouts. I learned so much from the scouts and had so much fun then!

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
When I was in scouts, there was a big variety. For back packing i usually recomended a small petzl or PT headlamp to new people. Most people would have a mag light as a high end big "bright" durable light. but there mostly cheap plastic lights. Mini mags seemed pretty popular. LED's were just catching on at the time. I dont think I saw any surefires or anything that tool cr123 batteries.(although I wasnt as into flashlights then)

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
In the early 60s when I went into the Scouts the light scene was terrible!
Many just had 2xD chromed Ray-O-Vacs (with the refrigerator magnets).
As if that weren't bad enough, the only cells you could get then were so bad that
it would actually be difficult to make a meaningful comparison to today's
high-tech cells.
In the late 60s or early 70s the Mallory light hit the scene. I wasn't a
Scout then but many Scouts must have used them. The Mallory was a plastic
2xAAx222 light that was designed for backpackers/climbers. It was light
and could be held in the teeth. It was a great improvement -- although
runtimes and bulb life make it look quite silly when compared to lights
available today.
When I was a Scout I'd have been in hog heaven with an ARC AA or a GMG
Infinity Ultra.

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
I hope boyscouts today would use better lights such as gerber TX3 LED. The price of that light is reasonable. They should be better equiped than the cheap minimag AA.

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
Back when I was in the Cub Scouts the best lighting available was
Tallow candles
Then when I was in the Boy Scouts those of us who had wealthy fathers who could buy us cutting edge equipment got some of those newfangled kerosene lanterns.

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
We did use the Coleman fuel lanterns quite a bit at basecamp, but they were only used when Scoutmasters and other adults were around to supervise. Sitting around camp at night listening to those hissing lanterns.... definitely some of the more memorable moments of my life so far. So many kids today that aren't involved in scouting have no idea what they're missing. Then again I don't know if scouting today is what it was 15, 30, 50 years ago. Now I talk to people my age (late 20's early 30's) and few of them were even involved in scouts. My mom was in the Girl Scouts and I know my dad was atleast a Cub Scout... may have stuck it through to Boy Scouts. I went as far as I could until nobody else would take up the Scoutmaster job for my troop. I think I went through 3 or 4 Scoutmasters in that troop. People found better things to do than to be a Scoutmaster. I made it to rank of Star. Still I'm very thankful for the experiences I did have.

Re: what light do boyscouts use?
I think people are scared of getting involved in boyscouts because of possible allegation of sexual harrasment against the adult leader. I wouldn't join boyscout now. There are too many legal risks. I am also tired of setting tents and supervise a bunch of rug rats running around the wilderness inhabited by bears.
