Li-ion question

Will they blow up even if they're fully discharged? I washed my 6-cell lenovo battery yesterday and i smelt something funny, heard something (something like soft arcing). I freaked out and left it in the toilet now it's on my table.

I've not tried to charge it yet (by putting it back in my laptop) hell if it blows i dont want to risk my precious computer!

Water did go between the copper pins that are the connectors could it be that there was some short circuiting? And because i wanted to dry them, i swung them very forcefully to get the water droplets off them.

The last time i pulled it out of my computer it was about 7% charged, it's a 10.8v and 57WH 6 cell LI-ion. Can you guys address my concerns thanks.

And what caused the scare? The water or the violent shaking? :thinking:

Welcome to CPF.

Most of the time a battery pack can endure a dunking and come out still working fine. The fact that you heard something going on raises some concern. When you decide to try to charge it, watch it like a hawk. You are looking for any signs of heating up or any other noises from the cells in the pack.

Let it dry out for a few days to be sure the water is gone then try it. I've inadvertently put my cell phone into the washing machine more than once and each time I set it out of a shelf next to my (heating/cooling) radiator for about a week to ensure evaporation. The air coming out of that radiator never exceeds 20-23 C though.

You could also put it in a bag of dry rice to help dehydrate it...

So i guess they'll still burn/explode, even if they're fully discharged? Because of something happens i can send it back to lenovo and bluff them it got spoilt by itself. :devil: It costs around 70USD to get one.

Well that would be abuse...:thumbsdow But Lenovo would realize the root cause real fast, one look at the circuit board inside the battery pack suffices.

I wouldn't use this battery anymore as elctrolysis has likely caused damage to the protection electronics inside the pack, causing shorts on the PCB which might cause the protection electronic to read cell voltages lower than in reality and

I think this is the safest policy. I could never trust it again, even if I watched it like a hawk.

I'm not sure how your Lenovo is designed, but in both of our laptops, the battery slides inside the case. If the battery expanded at all due to cell(s) venting, I doubt I'd be able to remove the battery from the laptop - certainly not quickly.

Seriously, toss it and replace it before it ruins your laptop or burns down the house.

I wouldn't trust it even if it works OK for a few months.

The battery pack pops out of the back so i think if it starts to heat up or make some funny noise/smell or expands/inflates then i can quickly remove it with thick gloves. I will be trying this on my friend's laptop so if it blows it's his problem.

I dont want to waste money getting another pack - they really mark up prices. And i think the battery is under warranty so i have to make it seem worse than i might be to get Lenovo to replace it.

If i get injured i'l tell you guys

I doubt that you will be able to remove the pack in time or even sense there is somethging wrong. I also doubt you will tell us if you get injured, you know its hard to type without hands...

It's very dirty and dusty, and i hate to wipe it so i though i would rinse it with water. I thought it was properly sealed lol.

I should be able to. I wont blow immediately anyway because it's in a casing. The casing has to melt before it can burn or even explode. It would be cool to see if it still works wil lbe going to test it out sometime next week.

Have you seen videos of lithium ion batteries exploding in laptops? Please don't play around with them - one mistake could cost you about everything... It's much safer to just recycle it and get a new battery.

Those flames can reach feet away. It can explode before your casing melts. They just can go off at any moment, especially since your battery is already damaged.

Just want to make sure we don't end up with yet another victim of exploding lithium ions..... they are not to be messed with!

The only thing the plastic case will do is to spread in the surroundung area in form of a thousand shrapnells. The cells don't even need to get hot enough for plastic to melt, if they do however, they will do so within a split second.

Seriously as you don't seem to have a clue about lithium ion batteries, please stop using this pack.

Hell yea. I was afraid that there might be some gas hydrogen build up inside the casing that i placed it on my floor instead of my table. Hell, if lithium comes in contact with water then :naughty: dead.

It is soooo sad that my battery warenty just ended 2 days ago :thumbsdow damn but i've got an engineer to come down the comming monday to test the battery so hopefully he's smart not to do anything stupid or maybe i could bargain with him to get me a new pack.
