The first couple of times I tried enabling customization it didn't work either. I was sort of suprised, because I'm usually pretty good with things like that. I found the procedure simple to understand; it just didn't work when I (as far as I know) followed the directions exactly. I'd say keep trying it, and you'll probably get it.

One tip that may or may not help is to actually count the 20 clicks. I know the directions say that you don't have to count them, as the light will stop turning off after the twentieth, but on one of my attempts (where I wasn't counting), the light stop turning off but I kept on clicking before noticing, and the command failed. Maybe I did something wrong, but it might help to count exactly 20 clicks and then do a press-hold.

Right?! I was just wondering when we might expect to see a resurgence of these sorts of remarks from the resident HDS critic.


I for one think it's awsome that Hogo shot that light, ANYWHERE on it, and it still functioned. I'd like to see the same test with some of the other popular lights and see how they stack up. I'm guessing FEW would still be in one piece, much less still operational.

But yes, I guess if you are planning on using a coat made of flashlights as body armor, you may still get hurt, HDS or not.

That beam looks terrible. HDS used to have the best tints and smoothest beams ever. Now I cant say the same. I just happy with my high cri.

I agree with this. And, I apparently lost the tint lottery. . . yikes. . . But, I put some Phaserburn Diffusion film on it and MAN O MAN! What a difference! no more rings and no more ugly tint. . . Really. Give it a try. . . I know. I "shouldn't" have to put a piece of diffusion film on a $200 light. . . but what are you gonna do. I did and it is lovely.

I am NOT a photographer. . . and I only have a crappy cell phone, AND, I don't have any white walls. So, I took some pics to try and demonstrate what I'm seeing. These are my white mini van side door pics . . . First photo without film and Second photo is with the film . . . These photos don't accurately display the tint color, but you sure can see the rings vs no rings. . . and, there is some difference in the tint with the film - although, you sure cannot tell by these pics. The tint is slightly warmer with the film.

Are you doing a soft reset first? The easiest method I have found is the following.
1. Turn the light on.
2. Unscrew the light while the light is on (this performs a soft reset).
3. Screw the light back together after it goes off (do this fast, you only have 7 seconds).
4. Click as fast as you can in a simi-controlled manner. Once the light stays on hold the button down until it turns off.
5. Customization is now enabled.

It's aluminum for crying out loud. The same thing would happen to just about any light.

And for the record, I'd bet that the Fenix T1 would hold up better being shot in the bezel the same way.

While it seems "dramatic" that the light withstood being shot with the .380, you did shoot it in the top part of the removable and totally non-important part of the light.

Shoot the light in the body and then turn it on.

Then you, and by default, HDS, will have something there.

I guess some people just aren't satisfied until their tools can be used as backup weapons against lightsabers :naughty:

A gimmick? It would be a gimmick if Henry was claiming his light to be "bullet proof". Independent testing to show the strengths of the light do not fall into the "gimmick" category.

Doesn't matter, though. HDS lights have proven their durability and that is why I purchased mine.

Is your glass ever not half empty??

Well said. I think that the reflector should be redesigned.

Is there anything that we owners can do to mod the reflector to create a more pleasing light? Copper tape, sandpaper, holy water sprinkles... Anything. I'm willing to try.

Besides, what further "proof" than what's already been done was needed to show that an HDS light is "tough?"
