Knives and Tools notes it doesn't have momentary.

So far I can see, they note memory and not momentary ;)

I think I would have preferred an optic for extra throw. Also I see that it may not be able to tail stand as the tail switch protrudes a bit.

Side-by-side there isn't much difference indeed. Runtime is better on the LD12. And you have 4 modes, instead of 3.
And a lower low-mode. Price is lower on the LD09 though.

The only valid arguments I've ever heard are for camping (in the tent) or going to to the toilet at night while at home.

Sorry but the demand for a moonlight mode for an EDC light just isn't valid for most people. Besides for both examples, camping and especially for taking a pee, a hands free headlight would be the better option.

I have a Quark QPA and the only real use I have for the moonlight mode is as a bedside light.

BTW this Fenix LD09 looks awesome. I'll probably order one.

I really like the low low modes. Wish Fenix would offer one. For this particular light doesn't have to be a sub lumen mode either. Anyone remember the low on the old EX10 or D10. How about the next level up on a 4/7 light or low on their Preon? What are those? 2-3 lumens. Anyone think they can't accomplish the same thing in a dark room or tent with 2-3 as 8? I think my LD10 has a 3 lumen low but gotta check that. Not sure anyone with an LD10 would want this.

Edit.

Yup the it says 3 lumens for the LD10. Plus it has a higher initial fire on turbo than the rating would imply. I guess they're calling the new light a LD09 for a reason. Maybe it is a price point thing? Now that I am playing with it not sure why my LD10 was taken out of the rotation? Kinda wish it would tail stand better like my older L2D-Q5. Still darn nice light. :)

Please check my recent conversation:

Me:
Question to you: Does Fenix plan a light with a real low/moon mode? So 1 or less lumens?
I'm sure many customers will love this….

Fenixlight:

Thank you so much for your suggestions, I will feedback this to our R&D department.

So, in the future???

Gosh that is a shame. Really like the sub lumen moon mode on my 4/7 2XAA X. I was skeptical but after several week long hurricane blackouts it was great to use around the house. I didn't care if the light was on or off as the runtime is crazy long. I could understand that maybe the larger market might not want it but then again with high lumen lights in B&M stores offering other options could be adventurous. It isn't totally like the old days when online was really the only source for a very bright LED light. I do like that Fenix offers standard battery types and they seemed optimized to run them. This is a downer for some but a positive for me. I guess that same could be said about the moonlight mode. Speaking of moonlight modes the E01 skips down to a nice low as part of the regulation.

I'll be watching initial reviews as they start shipping... I'd like me an XP-E2, and I'm glad there's no strobe... But I want to hear more about how the "Multi-function tactical tail switch for momentary-on, constant-on, and output selection" works out in practice. If the UI is well-done (and SOS mode is hidden), I can probably live with the fact that it comes on in medium mode first :/

And while I wouldn't hold my breath wishing for a sub-lumen mode from Fenix, a fourth mode at 1-2 lumens would have been an incentive for me. From what's been published thus far, the LD09 doesn't seem all that different from a Xeno E03...

I wonder if they are going to make a full on LD20 style light with the xp-e2 size emitter. That would be pretty sweet in my opinion. LD18?

The LD09 looks like a rebirth of the LD10, maybe from people not liking the interface of the new Fenix lights? The forward button. I haven't kept up with lights for a while, but Fenix did away with the LD10 and came out with the LD12 with that forward switch for changing modes. I prefer tail clicky's for going thru the modes. No searching for a switch in the dark. I have two LD10's and have given them away as Christmas presents. Gave one to my other half who lost it and replaced it with an LD12. It's a nice light, and if you can find that forward switch in the dark, I supposed it would be ok. The beam is nicer than the LD10. I'll give it that. I don't like lights that remember the last mode you had the light on either.

I own all Fenix lights, but just recently have been forced to move away from Fenix as they do not offer anything with a "Moonlight" function. I've just bought a Thrunite for it's Moonlight function, and will probably be ordering one or two more. Possibly another Thrunite and an EagleTac. Small one AA lights for the bedroom. The moonlight function is the best option for getting up in the middle of the night. The LD10 on it's lowest setting is blinding in a dark room when you have just woke up and need a tiny amount of light to see where you are going. I have one light that is moonlight only. It came as a freebie with something I bought a couple of years ago, and I use it every night. Problem is that it is a very cheap light and I have to fiddle with the switch to get it to come on. Now that I know that good lights with Moonlight are out there, I'm all over them. If the LD09 had a moonlight function, I'd be all over it.

Surely you have some real world use for 0.06 of a lumen like all these other stealthy ninjas...?

I've had to buy or modify special flashlights to fit my toilet-ops requirements, they all have a secret no-moon mode of zero lumens...

This was my thought about it as well. I like my LD10 though and would love to replace it with this light. I do own the PD22, LD22 and PD32UE though which all have the extra side switch, but I don't like the side switch too much compared to the predecessors of these. I am able to find the side switch if I need it, but I prefer switching modes with the tail clicky, because it is a lot easier and more intuitive to me.

I agree. I use the moonlight on my SC52w, H600w, H52w all the time. If I had the 4-mode instead of 3-mode on my L10 and L10c, I would use those often as well.

Just a few uses:

- All throughout the night while backpacking or camping
- Kayaking at night (hate blinding myself while trying to enjoy the darkness and stars)
- Going to bed late trying not to wake up my wife
- Walking through the house in the middle of the night
- Reading a menu in a dark restaurant (haven't done this yet, but I'm sure I will in the future)
- Reading a program at a concert or play
- And probably checking on the baby at night (he's due any day now!)
- To provide just enough light to see what I'm eating while watching a movie in the basement on the projector (ceiling bounce from the table next to the couch)

I still may end up with one anyway since I really like the Fenix quality.

I mostly buy moonlight mode lights, so don't own any Fenix lights, but I understand Fenix wanting to cater to the more mainstream market where there is little demand for ML mode and low lows. I've seen Fenix (in their Q&A thread) make a statement that they have no interests in entering the sub-lumen market... something or other about Foursevens/David - almost as if there was some kind of agreement when he separated and started up his own company. An 8 lumen low is kinda high for a small light like this though (and esp. the E05 SS), and I'm sorry to see them slowly dropping what used to be their 3 lm low mode for all their lights. For me it's about the emergency runtime and reasonably material mode spacing (with 55>130 being particularly immaterial).

Sounds a forward clicky with a M>L>H sequence, and as usually with forward clicky multi-modes, will be "momentary" only for the first press.
