Vinh light recommendation - comparable to t6vn

I'm looking for a vinh light that will be an upgrade from the t6vn I had. I sold it to buy a larger light and realized I do not like anything above a 90mm head.

Is there anything out there that can improve on the t6vn's output and throw while keeping the head size below 100mm max?

Maybe something as a host that can have 4 xhp35's put in it? My goal is 10k+ lumen at 1400m+ throw. Here is the kicker though, I don't want it above a 5000k color.

The TN40Svn hits right in your target. And, unlike the T6vn, you can lock it out by twisting the tail cap.

By the way, I sent my TN40Svn back to Vinh for a Narsil ramping upgrade, along with my X45vn. That really increased the practicality of both those power hitters!

I have looked at that light so many times in the last year. Only reason I didn't get it was the very marginal lumen upgrade from my t6vn, and the fact it's 100mm head. I would like it under 90. I would push to that 100mm head if the performance was a substantial difference though. I was hoping I missed a light or you guys had a custom idea in mind. I don't know much about lights, just what I've read here and there.

Edit: If I was going to have to sacrifice somewhere, I might give up a little lumen in exchange for some more throw but it seems like as soon as you want more then 1400m in throw with a >90mm head, the lumen drops to the 2-3k range because they are all singles.

I'm not sure how much of an upgrade you're looking for, but there are physics at play that will limit improvements. In order to get marginally more throw, you need more surface area, which requires a bigger head.

You can try changing out XPL PDTs to XHP35 HIs for an increase in lumen output, but throw should be very similar. The downside is it will heat up much faster. Having experience with the matter, I can also tell you that an increase in output from 6k to 10k lumens won't look very impressive if throw stays the same. The human eye is far more sensitive to lux increases.

You will have to increase head size if you want both lumen and throw increase ala TN40 or X65mini.

I understand completely, and I fear that whatever I do get will be very marginally better for probably double what I sold my t6vn for. If I could buy it back I would.

What about something with a large jump in lumen with a little less throw? Maybe above 1000m still. I saw the imalent dt35 I think did 8500lm and 1000m stock. I know vinh won't touch imalent much right now but is there something similar to that? I think it has a sub 80mm head also. Big downside for me though is that it's still 6500k. I've learned the hard way that my eyes do not like 6500k and I need to go back down to 4-5k.

I'm npt onto throwers, do don't tell me off fpr being dozy, but have you looked at Vinh's LEP lights?

They look pretty scary to me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do love that w30vn but for the price it's tough for me to justify. I'm looking for more of a flood throw combo without the large diameter head. I really think the t6vn was very underrated for its time. Especially since 3 years later it's tough for me to find something even a little better for around the same price.

Tn40svn and the x65vn mini. I have both. Both are excellent. If your saying you would buy your t6vn back, then just the tn40svn instead. It's really not that big. It feels great in hand.

I know this is a dumb question, but why have both when they are so similar? If you had to choose one, which one and why? If I do decide to step up the head size, I was leaning towards the mini. Right now my head size is 130mm and I find it just too large for me. I never use it because of it. It's also heavy.

The high output throwers is my favorite genre in flashlights. The tn40svn was my favorite all time light and when the x65vn mini was released, I thought it would be the light to finally dethrone it. Well, it did and it didn't. I still love the tn40svn because it just feels lighter and smaller and more comfortable to hold and the switch feels nicer, even tho the x65vn mini weighs less.
Performance wise, x65vn mini takes it. So I ended keeping both. I have more insight and a beam shot over on the x65vn mini thread.

My 0.2 bytes: Anything less than X65vn is less. You decide how much less you want.

I searched the web a lot for a long time to find beamshots of what I wanted, and I pulled the trigger to get what I wanted, and I got the most beam performance per unit bulk by pulling the trigger on the best of what was available at the time.

I like X65 as a reference point. The mini X65 has less cooling fins than the original X65, but the original is much more cost.

Less bulk is less beam performance/beam temperament. Especially if some or more throw is desired. A well tempered high performance beam needs more bulk.

I have nineteen real lights, because for each point in the continuum, I want less of this, and more of that.

My maximum bulk point is Imalent R90TS. It has more than X65, but more bulk.

Don't forget to email Vinh with your questions.

Happy hunting!

richbuff is right, everything is a trade-off. More recently, there's been a revolution in throw numbers for smaller lights with flat black, W1 and W2. But even that comes at the price of a pencil beam.
Emisar D4 has astounding lumens per size.... for a few seconds.

I'll be moving into the mountain side home I just built in the White Mountains of NH next week and I'm about to wet my pants while playing with my 2 dozen or so V54 lights!

b8llz & rich, how are your opinions about the CFT90/SBT90 high output throwers with 5-6k lumens compared to their multi-emitter brothers (X65vn/tn40svn)?

Less is less, yes, but they are also more, and provide the throw that he wants.

Are these less desirable to you two?

I think that they are equally desirable to me. I think that SBT90 high output throwers with 5-6k lumens (K75) will have more throw and less lumens than X65Vn, so I submitted my serious inquiry to Vinh for it. I have 19 performance lights, and I have room for some more.

My tn42vn90 is my second favorite light. The only reason why it's not my favorite is because if I can only keep one light of my collection, it would be the tn40svn because it's more versatile. It has the lumens, the flood and spill,! While still having great throw, oh and the size.

The tn42vn90 is super fun though. The massive lumens into a beam that hits the end target makes me giggle every time. It's just a bit top heavy because the head is so large. The x65vn mini is top heavy too. But the tn40svn feels great and balanced.
