It is weird with disk layers, apparently. 900 lumen driven on high, headlamp. I do not want yet to give the brand out, until some honest guessing or information is given.
What led is this?

Those disk layers could be an optical anomaly since you are looking into the reflector.

No, not looking through a reflector. It is a zoomy that I just unscrewed the head.
By the way, this is a Harbor Freight headlamp that was $29. An impulse buy.
I don't think it nearly as bright or nice as my 2s18650 35mm reflector t6 headlamps that were all the rage for bikers a few years ago, nor as good of a buy. I do not agree with the stated lumens or range.
This said, it is a very good entry work light that would offer someone a good 4 to 5 hours of useable light, with the option to swap out the rechargeable sub par lithium battery pack for the supplied 4 aa pack. It is good for people who normally try to buy camping head lamps to use for work (they do not work because the these lights do not have the proper driver settings, nor the battery reserve to actually do anything serious.)
I felt I needed to buy the light, as it was the first halfway serious worklight I have ever seen in a brick and mortar store. I needed to know what other's who don't know as much as myself (cpf member since fall of 2007) are now getting access to.
The ring design seems to make more sense than the typical multi die for theoretical focusing reasons. It seems to me that a super bright center area could have rings added to up the lumens without sacrificing the center brightness and focus. Probably, my theory wouldn't work, unless the center rings lit at lower power and outer rings only lit at higher voltages--essentially making it operate very center focused at low current and increasing flood at higher current, which is the best of both worlds.

As the rings are offset to one side, something you would not see with the precision of semiconductor MFG technology, I am going to go with optical effect in combination with the reflector/optic/LED. The LEDs will be square/rectangular to maximize die yield. There could be an anomaly in the phosphor deposition but unlikely. Could be a structure on the bottom of the LED silicon lens.

I was thinking of returning it, but think it might be a fair reference light to use as an example of the best of off the shelf, yet still pathetic when compared to a good light, light. Any way, it thought I might throw it in the garage for a quick grab light for when I don't have my book bag of homemade head and wrist lights or have any single 18650 hl hanging from my belt. ( I really don't like to use the single 18650 unless no other options are available, anyway.)
