Chance, that's funny!

When I was a kid, my dad made me hold the light (with a bang the side flashlight) while he fixed things. I'd often get the reprimand... "You know a good helper already has the next tool in hand before the mechanic asks for it." As a result, I scored very high in mechanical aptitude tests. So now, I do my grandson the same favor. 😊

It is not uncommon to hear him say... "Poppy, is this one of those learning things!?"

With a bang on the side flashlight?! That's what we call a handicap. You never had a chance.

As my boys grew I'd ask for them to lend a hand on occasion. One event I was changing the oil in my car and asked my oldest (then around 5) to stick around and hand me a tool when I asked for it. A minute later I see him riding off on his bicycle. Eh, so much for that. He is my Einstein kid. He could read a newspaper on his 3rd birthday. A few years back he figured out how to add 10hp to the wheels of his hot rod car using various durometer urethane in the motor mounts. That caused me to smile. The idea was to stiffen the twist of the engine while providing shock absorption so the motor didn't rattle your fillings out.

When the youngest was about 5 I was swapping a window motor in a car door and struggling to hold a wind noise blocker flap away from the motor. My son said "I'll be right back" and returned with a roll of duct tape. That caused me to smile. He designed his first web page at 10 and now he's an IT guy for a large company.

At one point they shared a bedroom. And a tv. One day the youngest drew a line on the floor so that the tv would be in his half. Trouble was he had to enter the brothers territory to leave the room. That caused me to laugh. His mom did not see the humor as he had drawn the line on a hardwood floor with a green sharpie. Doh!

Both were pretty good at holding the flashlight for dad. The trick with the oldest was to hand him two. One was his to light what he wanted to, the other to help me. The youngest didn't like brushing his teeth alone so he just enjoyed the human interaction.

Thinking back to those times just caused me to smile.

Today I took an hour and a half round trip to drop off my grandson for training. I play pandora and sing along with the songs.
At some point I realized that I was smiling during
George Strait's song "Amarillo by morning"

Amarillo by mornin'
Up from San Antone
Everything that I got
Is just what I've got on
I ain't got a dime
But what I've got is mine
I ain't rich
But Lord, I'm free

It just made me smile to think that this man is free and happy and not held down by possessions, or lack thereof.

How many of our problems are really "first world problems"?

At any rate... it made me smile. Life is good! :)
