I just had a ZiegenBock Amber, and I am impressed. Great tasting and smooth.
I think I've just found my new brew. Unfortunately, it's brewed and only distributed in Texas, so when I move, I'll have to have it flown in /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anybody else have a favorite that they have/had to give up?

I used to drink Millenium martinis. It was a regular martini to start with, then champagne, citrus rinds, and some red syrupy liquer I believe was called chambord.

These were very good, but after I had been drinking them for a few months, I realized: 1-These were expensive compared to my regular cheap beer. 2-This drink made me look less than manly when all my friends were swilling down MGD and I was tosting a pink martini... I'm back to beer.

some vineyards use neurotoxic bird poison to protect their grapes; the birds eat a few grapes then fall to the ground quivering.. Organic farms cover the grapes with netting to keep it from the birds, it's a bit more labor intensive, but maybe that's why there was less of a hangover, if any, from the Four Chimneys organic wine I used to buy by the case, when I lived in New York state..the Four Chimneys winery is in the Finger Lakes region, and they still don't take credit cards online..last time I checked anyway.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So, as I'm walking into the bar the other night there is this nun standing outside preaching on the evils of drink.

"DON'T go into this den of SIN! Please!" She said to me as I tried to walk past her. I decided to talk to her and said "Have you actually ever TRIED any liquor?"

She paused and said "No, not really..."

I said "well, how do you know it's evil then? Let me buy you a drink!" And I tried to lead her inside.

She pulled back and said "NO, I could never go in there. But if you could bring me out a whisky in a coffee mug so that nobody would know what it was I would be willing to try it."

I simled and said "Sure, be right back"

I went into the bar and ordered a whisky in a coffe mug and the bartender says to me "Is that darned nun out there again?"

is there any way I can find out which vinyards use that stuff? When my wife and I had company over, we used to bring out a nice bottle of wine on occasion. I'd like not to poison my guests next time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I just found some of that Four Chimneys wine online, they want over 50% of the cost of the wine to ship it from NY to CA..so I'm off to look for some Cali organic wines..

A lot of wines have sulfiting agents as well. Some do not take well to these.

Cute stories? The first time I was plastered was by accident. I was four or five years old. My dad made some root beer (mostly for me) and beer for himself. These weren't labeled in a way that I understood, but I knew which stack of cases was root beer. Anyway, after some party my dad threw, my root beer stash was a case shorter. No problem, I just opened the next box down and grabbed a bottle. One swallow told me that it went rancid /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif , so I poured it out and grabbed another one. Gosh, two bad bottles in a row! That's when I pulled the whole case out the front door and went through the bottles systematically- open, take a swallow, pour the rest out. I remember waking up half in, half out the front door.

The second time I got smashed to see what it was like. I was sixteen or seventeen. I played it pretty cool until I got to bed. The next morning I wasn't feeling well. What really pi**ed me off though, was that some punk came over to my house and took a d*mp on my high school yearbook right in the middle of my bedroom floor. It didn't take me more than six hours to figure out that it was me.

I've been wasted a couple times since then, but it's a lot more fun when I can walk.

As for preferences, I still like dark beer. Wine's okay too, but tends to be a bit pricey. Lately I've been drinking more hard cider that anything else. It kinda makes sense to with all those apple trees in my back yard. I also drink mead on occasion, and some of it's derivatives (melomel and cyser). As for the hard stuff, G&T is nice and Kahlua is versatile.

Funny, an article in New Scientist in this last couple of weeks described a new method of sterilizing wine with short electric shocks. It was more effective than sulfites or pasteurization at killing any bacteria in the wine and didn't cause any allergies like sulfites nor affect the flavor of the wine like heating it does.

I would expect that to roll out to be a commercial procedure in a hurry as nobody in the wine industry wants to add that crap to the wine or ruin it's flavor. I do know more than one person that has had to take a day off work due to food poisoning from a bottle of red wine. I don't mean hangover problems, but other issues that can keep you within running distance of the bathroom for a day or two... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

as far as the bird stuff, I wasn't able to find any articles or other info about that. But I wouldn't want it in my wine either.

I know I have. Funny thing, though, I've never been more healthy. Not a cold, sore throat, flue, anything I can remember since before COVID.

It's probably due to all the other precautions, but I can't help but think the alcohol is doing its part by disinfecting places that can't be washed.

I am very sensitive to bitterness so alcohol tastes like poison to me (well, it is). And before someone asks: no, I dont like coffee or bitter chocolate either.

People have always told me "you'll get used to the taste". Theres something I used to say in response to that: "an acquired taste is just an excuse for something that's objectively bad".
A good test to figure out if something tastes objectively bad is to feed it to a young child. If they spit it back out, it probably ain't great.

I don't recall ever drinking liquor for the flavor.

I have however on ocasion enjoyed the flavor of a glass of beer for the first 5-6 ounces. My dad would split a Miller pony with me when I was a drinker. For years I did not understand why he would only drink about 4 ounces of beer about twice a year. Then after not touching any alcohol for a while I understood. Half a Miller pony was about right for me too.

These days I don't partake in either but there was a time when I did.

Jeez, a bunch of teatotalers around here? But everyone's got their reasons to imbibe or not. Anything like the natural conversion of sugars into alcohol is a miracle and proof of God's love of man. Even fruit flys are more attracted to fermented fruit than not. I've got wine and tequila stockpiled like ammo and batteries. Daily enjoyment with rare times of excess but the pandemic has definitely increased it!

None of those bottles are in my covid medicine cabinet, but a few weeks ago, I probably had strep throat. I bought a bottle of Drambuie and gargled with a couple of shots. The next day, no strep. That will probably sit in my cabinet until it turns into syrup.

My covid medicine cabinet comes from grapes. My consumption is up perhaps 20% since covid. Not too bad.

The Drambuie was a one and only purchase. I wanted to make the Mrs. and myself a Rusty Nail. Pretty tasty once the preferred percentage combination is settled. However, I pretty much never drink after eating dinner, so probably won't be having them again.

I'm a parent of a toddler. I don't drink much, but when I do I prefer mixing anything that won't kill me in small amounts into a glass and downing it quickly until my entire body relaxes. This occurs either when my wife is home OR after the child is reliably sawing logs. Perhaps 2-4 times monthly. Maybe higher if tantrums are occuring at a raised incidence. In short, if it has a percentage and isn't strictly medical or industrial I'm probably in for at least a glass on the right evening.
