I've done this. I wasn't too happy with the noticeable loss of light with this system. I find it better if I frost the lens slightly. I posted the beams here a while ago.

What do you frost the lens with?
I've seen frosted glass spray...wonder how that would do.

I had a spare lens and very lightly sanded the side facing the led with 800 paper.

In my case, the beam still had the NB45 spot, but also more satisfying spread - at least for woods walking. The white reflector I made was not a satisfying beam, but I was not prissy about the painting - I did it fast and with three coats just as an experiment. That reflector seemed dimmer than a frosted lens, but I made no light meter test of them.

The HDS flood reflectors, as I recall, were very special because they did not reduce overall output.

diffuse reflectors are for close range, they lose throw, and they lose lumens. I did a test and painted glow paint on a reflector, and lost 50% of the Lumens.

Just like the old diffuse reflectors, these kill your throw, though not as bad as the original diffuse. Also, just like the original diffuse reflector, while very efficient, you still lose lumens. ... Nothing is free. It about doubles the size of the hot spot, but makes it dimmer as a result.
These aren't for everyone. If you want every last lumen out of your light, this isn't for you. ...

Glow paint isn't very reflective. The original HDS diffuse was a special material which was designed to reflect. The glow reflectors we did also did not lose 50% either as it was not a paint.
