Second biggest noise issue are those infernal leaf blowers. They stink up the entire block besides whenever they're in use. There is a big grassroots movement to ban the things. The sooner the better.

Ugh, I despise those things for the noise they make and the clouds of dust, debris, and pollen they blow all over the block. Those and the big commercial mowers.

Both for the noise and the terrible effect they have on my allergies.

That's one big reason I like winter time: no landscaping activity!!!

add some octane booster into his tank when he is not looking, add more than manufacturer recommends, a lot more, his engine will seize up and he will never know why. he'll assume it is due to his modifications. Safe to assume next car he wont modify or rev in the mornings. Do not bother with sugar in a gas tank, it is a myth, sugar does not dissolve in gasoline,
I realize the right way is it to call cops, but good luck getting any results from such actions. nowadays unless you report a shooting with dead lying around, no one will rush to do anything for a noise complaint.

Huh, I've been using basic yellow 3M plugs also, but with the taper tip, and they work well so long as I get them in securely. Though, I seem to have a funny shaped ear canal on the right side that makes it harder to get a plug in, so the taper plugs work better in that situation.

Basic disposable plugs are cheap, so might as well try a few varieties to see what works best.

I haven't yet tried sleeping with plugs made for shooting, so I don't know if that'd make any difference. The basic 3M industrial plugs seem to do well enough in most cases for me. It doesn't eliminate all sound, it just helps reduce it to a level that doesn't snap me awake with my heart racing.

I do not know how well they work for low and mid-tone noise pollution but for stuff like jack hammers, lawn mowers, and construction equipment like saws they work very well.

I think the reason the square tip work for me is the girth is larger end to end so it just seals better thoughout my ear canal versus the tapered kind.

I used to need background noise to fall asleep. I found that listening to rain sounds as white noise was the ticket for me. Put me right out. listened to that for years on my phone as I fell asleep. Then I would be driving down the road and every time it rained I'd notice myself nodding off behind the wheel! I had inadvertantly conditioned myself to fall asleep when it was raining like Pavlov's dog.

If noise is that bad of a problem for you, and you're able to work on your home, you could try using rock wool insulation in the walls (floors and ceilings too) to soundproof the rooms in your home.

Big +1 to that. If I had my own home instead of an apartment, I'd make the bedroom into a sound-proof chamber as much as I could. Not sure what to do about windows, though. Maybe something that could fit in place over the window and still be easily removed when desired.

Also, raggie and others, if you seem unusually noise-sensitive (like I am), ask your doctor about it and see if you might get some anti-anxiety medication. They make some very basic and cheap stuff that is basically just a high-powered antihistamine that can help take the edge off and relax you a bit. Kind of like having a glass of wine, but cheaper per dose!

Double pane windows make a huge difference. When we had them installed in 1994 the noise from the airliners was only at an annoying level if the windows were open. I imagine newer triple and quadruple pane windows would do even better. Most heat loss (and a lot of sound intrusion) comes from the windows.

I haven't tried it but putting 1" or 2" closed cell foam insulating boards over your windows on the inside might help a lot with noise also. It'll certainly help with heating and cooling bills.

No need to escalate things unnecessarily, just ask him if he could possibly turn it down before making judgements about it, giving him permanent eye damage, or potentially have him encounter one of the bad cops who'll escalate it a lot more and shoot him?

1) How long has this person been doing this?

2) Is this noise emanating from a car parked in front of a single-family home or a car parked in an apartment complex?

If the car in question is parked in an apartment complex, his neighbours may have talked to the landlord about this and his days as a tenant may already be numbered.

What I am getting at is, if this fellow is getting your attention at 5AM, chances are excellent that your attention is not the only attention he is getting.

However, if this has been going on for some time (e.g. for three months or more), I am not sure what you can do. One thing I would not do is look for ways to annoy Mr. Noisy Car with a flashlight or anything else.

To my mind, Q4 of 2022 does not strike me as the best time to do things that are likely to get on other people's nerves even if they are in the wrong. I do not know what kind of patience you have, but I hope you will consider sitting tight for a bit and seeing if the problem ends up solving itself.

In the meantime, have you considered looking for a decent set of noise-cancelling headphones? I understand that you currently use earplugs (to no effect, apparently). However, perhaps a combination of earplugs + headphones might be effective enough to allow you to sleep without having to worry about a daily 5AM alarm call.

Complete waste of time. Obnoxious, genuine low-life individuals know when they're being obnoxious. And, they don't care. It's fun for them. This clearly isn't some reasonable individual who doesn't realize what he's doing every morning. Used to have a co-worker who constantly complained that politicians didn't give a crap about Joe & Jane Blow. The average hard-working public who got up early everyday to be packed like sardines onto buses and subway trains. Just trying to get by. Trying to eke out a living. Coming home exhausted. Again, packed tight like sardines. Trapped in tiny studio apartments. Hopefully not in neighborhoods that police refused to go to.

Before he got fired. He started bragging to everyone how much "FUN" it was to ride his Harley incredibly early through run-down neighborhoods. (The ones populated by Joe & Jane Blow.) Right around 2am. He'd rev. the engine, and open her up! Setting off every single car alarm in the neighborhood, waking everyone up; and thus contributing to their misery. Wasn't a one-time thing either. Did it on a regular basis. No one at work decided to waste their breath by talking to him about his most fun hobby. Well, fun for him. Everyone knew it would be a total waste of time trying to do so. And, this was a co-worker. Not some random stranger off the street.

Ugh. Unfortunately I can confirm this statement. I have a co-worker who is exactly like this. He thinks it's funny to **** off other coworkers and rile people up. It is like a game or a hobby to him.

I always think to myself "how many more workplace massacres have to happen in this country before people like him wake up and realize this is a bad idea?!"

Of course, if those people had enough intelligence and awareness to actually make that connection, they wouldn't behave that way in the first place!

I have found that the idea is not to completely block/eliminate the sound so that you don't hear it at all (that's virtually impossible by any normal means); rather, the goal should be to reduce the amount of sound you hear down to a level that doesn't trigger such a powerful stress response.

If I'm wearing plugs, or ear-muffs, or have the radio static turned up, I can still hear the door-slams, loud cars, and what-not, but they are muffled enough that the noise doesn't jar me so much and it's much easier to dismiss and ignore.
