I'm picking.a.brand.of.spray now. I'm.a.senior so the light will help me see them. My State isn't real gun friendly. :(

I'd recommend going with the larger (mini fire-extinguisher sized) canister of dedicated Bear Pepperspray. Such a spray usually comes with a holster, and has enough content to spray a very wide area in case you encounter more than one dangerous critter. Such as a pack of wolves. For that reason, I'd recommend staying away from gels. Those are great for one predator. But not multiple ones.

Are we sure the predators are four legged animals?
Edit: Bear size canister works for me 👍

If you go with bear spray get a good one like counter assault. If it doesn't stop whatever you spray it at then it's just meant to be your time to get attacked. Good luck and I hope you have many many many more miles of walking ahead of you

Spray is a tricky thing to use, you may get some of it back at yourself, not something you want durings an encounter with a wildlife. there are other means besides a gun, not as effective but maybe just enough to get away, in combination with a bright flashlight. We do not know if wildlife he encounters is aggressive, or whether or not he wants to hurt it.

Thanks for the thought. I'm considering maybe just changing where I walk to.another trail that is super wide and well maintained.

Walking alone at twilight or darkness is not advised. A flashlight might get you some moments but in the case of a mountain lion or 2 legged, they will come up from behind. Do you have a dog? That can help. Another vote for large can pepper spray. We have Counter Assault but also the marine/sport horn available. Our stun gun gets the dogs´ attention; just the sound (don´t keep the button down more than a second or so unless you are contacting an assailant, it is not good for the contacts) gets another moment for initiative. A decent quality stungun will be rechargeable. I tested it on myself and it HURTS.

I've oftentimes taught beginner students on self-defense.
Lesson #1 ~ You literally cannot defend your life without hurting your attacker. Physically impossible to do so. Doesn't matter if that attacker has two legs or four. A powerful light is useful for identifying something off in the distance or checking a long, straight trail at night. Just like a human-being, shinning a light in an animals face might cause it to stop and turn its head away for a split-second. But even a primitive animal has enough sense to keep its eyes closed and charge straight ahead at the last location it remembers it saw its target.

But after lesson #1, I tell any students who wish to leave; please do so now because I can't spend hours re-wiring their thought process after years or decades of that horribly ingrained belief. Wouldn't be fair to waste the time of the other students.

Whether it's a bullet to their gut or a blast of pepper spray to the eyes, either way; you're hurting that animal in order to stop its attack on you. As far as what's more humane, folks forget that individuals have ended up blind after taking a massive blast of pepper spray to the eyes. I mean permanently blind. Doesn't always happen. But happens enough. Personally, if that person who got blasted in the face was trying to kill or horribly injure another person; yeah not much sympathy from me.

Oh I absolutely agree, you have to hurt/cause pain, what i'm saying is spray may backfire on you, other means i meant other means that hurt, for op gun is not an option, but other means maybe are, i just don't think this thread will go on for much longer if we start discussing those.

good bear spray launches about 20-40 feet. Some of the cheap stuff just mists out a cloud.
