Our eldest son prepared meatloaf and mashed potatoes last night. I didn't get a chance to read the recipe and wasn't present when he combined the ingredients, but I can attest to how moist and delicious everything was.

Neighbor got bushel? big box of Gravenstein(sort of like golden delicious) so I was gifted a lot and mashed 'em all up! I like applesauce cake with a butter cream frosting-even cream cheese frosting is ok-but there's no way I'm buying bigger pants this year.

All these hamburger photos got me craving red meat. So I was determined to keep it cheap, but quality.
Found meat on sale at the local butcher shop, along with some essential veggies. Day-old brioche buns.

Toasted buns are a must, always season the tomatoes, shred the lettuce as thing as possible, use a melty cheese (I like American or Munster in this case) and my own version of Mac sauce.

I think I priced this out to ~$2.50 a burger. This burger was good even the next day.

I can't afford the counter space for a meat grinder, so I buy ground "meatloaf mix" 3/4 lb ground beef, and 3/4 lb ground pork - when I make meatballs, or meatloaf. It actually costs less than ground beef. I mix them together by hand, and add some Grill Masters: "Montreal Beef" or "Brown Sugar - Bourbon" seasoning. Usually an egg, some bread crumbs, an onion, and garlic, and/or some Italian seasoning.

My Grandmother had a hand powered grinder.
Something like this:

I don't remember what she made with it.

I think ham sandwiches, and maybe she made stuffed cabbage with meat she chopped up. Who knows, maybe some pierogies.

An immigrant widowed mom, raising two boys, during the depression, she knew how to stretch a dollar.

My grandma owned the same style meat grinder. I think it's in box somewhere along with her rolling pin. The wood pin has many miles on it. Just couldn't talk myself into throwing it into the fire place

367. Where's my prize?

I looked at a box of brownies in the grocery store. It said 110 calories per serving with 20 servings per box. (ie bite size little numbers.)
Poppy had 12, now 10.
110 x 20 = 2200
2200/12 = 183.333333
183.333333 x 2 = 366.66667 rounded up = 367.

Good math fixer!
I was going to do the same thing. I went to the trash to pull out the box, but it was too deep into the dew, so I let it go.

I had aspirations of no junk food this week and actually resisted the box of brownies I held in my hand to get the info. The photo in post #3496 made the decision tough but I held firm and put the box back on the shelf.
